NVIDIA today released the latest version of their GeForce software package, which allows your NVIDIA GPU to render the highest quality pixels. Version 385.41 is a WHQL release, and being a Game Ready driver means it brings with it support for upcoming games. Namely, users looking to enjoy Bungie's foray into the PC market with Destiny 2 with the Open Beta (open 28th to 31st August) will want to grab these. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds support also makes an appearance, as does ARK: Survival Evolved, F1 2017, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, and Quake Champions (Early Access).

SLI profile updates include addition (or update of profiles) for ARK: Survival Evolved, Destiny 2, Faith of Danschant, Lawbreakers, Secret World Legends, and Starpoint Gemini Warlords. Feature changes include removal of the nvtray process, as well as the elimination of the NVIDIA Tray icon from Windows task manager. As always, you can grab your NVIDIA drivers right here on TPU; just follow the link below.

I rather liked the tray icon. Damn. It was a convenient place to access bother the driver utilities and the GeForce Experience software all at once.

I do wonder how long SLI is gonna be supported for. I can see NVIDIA being really reluctant to let SLI go as it means extra sales for them.

I'll be installing these latest drivers immediately with wild abandon as usual. :p

I remember when the Riva TNT drivers were 5MB and that was large at the time because of dialup being the most common way to access the internet.

To be honest I don't see what was the reason behind this. Granted I did not use it much (probably not alone with this) but it was way more convenient than having two nVIDIA icons on my desktop.

I like to keep my desktop screen as clutter free as possible, this is not helping in my efforts to do so...

I remember getting my driver updates from CDs that were included with the monthly IT mags.

And then there was the rage when advanced control panel got introduced making us download 20MB+.
For those that don't know, a common 14.4kbps connection took 10 minutes to download 1MB. Top-end modems were rated at 56kbps, but usually could only establish a ~40kbps connection. It was way harder to distribute rubbish back then. Well, not really, but it was harder to distribute it in FHD.

I use neither: right click on the desktop -> Nvidia Control Panel is where it's at. As you noted, we use it infrequently enough to not worth a desktop icon.

Modems were rated for 56k, ISPs were only ever able to serve up 44kbps IIRC.

Neah, it was about the physical line length. At some point I moved about one block away and was practically near ISP's hub and my connection speeds went up. Same PC, same modem.

What makes a driver "Game ready" for a specific new game, what is there so special about a driver for those specific games?
The game also runs fine with any later driver most of the time.

Right, I understand that, but what would be different in the code compared to another driver.
What is added or what is taken away?

Game specific optimizations and profiles. :)

It would vary by game what specific changes/adds/removals are done.

Nothing. If for example one title is heavy on geometry and easy on shadows, you can "hardcode" some stuff for that title instead of applying heuristics to determine that. The more you eliminate branching from your code, the faster it runs.
Worst case scenario, the game uses the graphics API incorrectly, yet the drivers accommodates that if it can work around it.

436MB for GPU drivers... wow.
the driver install packages have not been just the driver (not for amd either, if you look at the news post right after this one, amd package is roughly the same size) for decades now.

nvidia kind of started this (wasn't the first but has been consistent with this ever since, amd joined a bit later) with the "detonator" drivers which started compiling all the different drivers (for supported cards/gpus) into one convenient installer. new gpus get added to the supported pack when they come out, every once in a while, very old gpus get their support dropped and no longer get drivers included in the pack.

you can see what's in the package easily when you unpack it.
this 385.41 driver package contains the following installers:
  • 361.2 mb - drivers (96.1 mb of this is nvidia control panel), the amount of different gpus supported by these drives is quite large plus cuda/ocl/compilers taking up a lot of space.
  • 205.1 mb - physx
  • 163.3 mb gf exp streaming service
  • 131.1 mb - gf experience
  • 69.6 mb - nvcamera
  • 32.0 mb - shadowplay
  • 29.2 mb - nview
  • + 12 or so smaller installers

I've installed this one yesterday, PUBG seems to work a bit better. I would dare to say I gained 3-5 fps
