Nvidia vs AMD 780/290

Well i know from the title is a little fan boy aggravating
I'm thinking of upgrading my GTX570, which although it's age, works pretty much fine in all games, but want a newer card to cope with more modern titles. Personally I'm not an AMD user, i happily recommend AMD cards to my brother and friends however I've always been using Nvidia since my 7300LE (Mainly since i like the drivers). Currently the main thing I'm weighing is the fact i have purchased a lightpack unit which seems to favor nvidia cards immensely.

But without speculation can somebody please explain to me why i'd want to pick each of the cards and perhaps how the other would be more useful. i'm open to all options and don't really want to spend more than £350 which Throws the Ti cards out of the window.

Ok, I'll play, this is my top list:

Why would you want to pick AMD?

because you mine crypto currency
because you predominantly write/use OpenCL code heavy with integer math (see 1)
because you want to beta test Mantle
because you are game developer and want to optimize your game for AMD
because you think that DX 11.2 support is important
because you want to make retailers rich

Why would you want to pick NVidia?

because you love their drivers
because you like cooler cards that use less power
because you predominantly write/use CUDA code heavy in single precision floating point math
because you want GPU PhsyX in handfull of games that support it
because you are game developer and want to optimize your game for NVidia
because you want to make nvidia and their shareholders rich

The drivers haven't been an issue on the AMD side for some time. In fact I've often seen more Nvidia users complain of driver problems in games I've played in the last couple years.

Depend on what games you play, personally i would go with R9 290(Non-X)

I spot cheap MSI R9 290 Gaming 4 GB its only $469 from Amazon

Not a bad deal, but "Usually ships in 1 to 3 months."

I thought I read somewhere that BF4 uses/recommends a card with 4gb vram. Any idea if any games coming out in the next 2 years will need that extra vram? I'm on the fence too about GTX 780 ti vs 290x.

I can confirm on maxed settings +110% Res cale @1080P BF4 uses over 3.2GB VRAM
