Always keep in mind that certain applications make better use of different hardware. It shouldn't, but it does.

NVIDIA GTX295 VS ATI 4870X2 = The 295 edges by about 10% for average frames. Minimum frame advantage is less than 3%. Age of Conan favors the ATi cards considerably.
NVIDIA GTX285 VS ATI 4890 = N/A
NVIDIA GTX275 VS ATI 4870 = If we're speaking 1GB model, then I'd say the 4870 for average frame rates; however on the minimum frame end, 275 might be more stable.
NVIDIA GTX260 VS ATI 4850 = 260 clearly
NVIDIA GTX285 VS ATI 4870 = 285 slight edge over 4870 1GB

So U Mean The GTX 295 Is The Fastest GPU In The World...HmmM Interesting

as i say we talk about better performance , the faster GPU in the is the 4870x2 but not the best performance cuz there is many thing performance depend on it like ROP's , memory bandwidth , and shader unit
ATI have a lead in shader unit , nvidia always have more ROP's
both of them challenge in memory bandwidth
so i offer something to you , something called "your system" and "performance per dollar"

GTX 260 is marginally better in more games than the 4870. :ohwell:

but it also depends whether you compare 260 Core 216 and 4870 1GB

agree , GTX 260 have better performance in games , compare as GTX 260 192 vs 4870 512 , and GTX 260 vs 4870 1G

Exactly, which is why I said its subjective and highly circumstantial

I would put the 4870 512 MB and GTX260 on the same rank

and I'd put the 4870 1 GB and GTX 260 (216 core verson) on the same rank

Edit:

1- GTX 295
2- 4870X2
3- 4850X2
4- GTX 285
5- GTX 275
6- 4890
7- GTX 260 216 core = 4870 1 GB
8- GTX 260 = 4870
9-GTS 250
10-4850 = 9800 GTX+

...Think that is somewhat accurate?

dude , still most important think ,, you next move "upgrade" depend on your next mother board
x58 = SLI + crossfire = nvidia card + ATI card
nforce = SLI = nviddia card
x48 , p45 , AMD 790fx , AMD 790GX = crossfire = ATI card

AboAl3meer KG21,

To be honest, most of the GPUs you've listed will be bottlenecked by the processor, you'd need to overclock the 4600+ to around 3 GHz if you want a very high end GPU and even then its full potential will not be unlocked, crossfire will demand a even more powerful CPU.

Your best bet is to look at the midrange, 4850, 4770, 4830, GTS 250, 9800 GTX+ etc

Those midrange cards will smoke your current 8500 GT and are more than capable to run today’s games.

Sounds good except I'd get PC8500 (1066MHz)

Edit:

Wouldn't the cheapest method be to keep your existing "Abit NF-M2S" and throw in a Phenom X3 720 BE and change the 8500 GT with a ATI 4870.

Your ram and other components remain the same. Whollah a cheap high-end gaming rig.

Edit 2:

Or alternatively, keep your components the "same" and just remove the 8500 GT and replace it with a more than capable midrange card such as the GTS 250 or 4850/4770/4830?

Edit 3:

My card is much older than his is and it still spanks it.

indeed, all the threadstarter needs is a new "gaming" video card and he is sorted.

ok what about 2x4870x2 crosfire and 2xGTX285 crosfire too which is the best one

what for , games i don't think so cuz any game crazy FPS with one 4870x2 or GTX 295 and other card's lower than this card's

iknow that thanks But Im building new PC
Check this out
M.Bord - gigabyt GA-MA 790x
GPU - EVGA GTX285 Or My be Sapphire HD 4870x2
CPU - AMD PhenomIIx4 955 3.2
RAM - 4x2G DDR2 Bus 800 Kingstone
How Is That For now

i prefer got an ATI card on an crossfire mother board , and you don't need to try 4870x2 cuz first i know your max resolution you play is 1280x1024 , 2nd you can try an 4850 or 4870 or 4890 and if you don't like the performance you can pick up other card and crossfire it and you reach the 4870x2 performance in same price

no man i need to change It Im Getting Sick of it:shadedshu and the GTX285 Lock Great To Me And My CPU is SO Slow so Ineed NEW One

my brother aamoory , my advice go after this "best performance per dollar" and you lose nothing , so i suggest you tow system cheap with high performance
intel
M.B p45 with 2 pci-e , cpu q6600 or e8400 , 4G rams 1066 , 4870 1G
AMD
M.B 790GX or 790FX , cpu phenom II 940 , 4G ram 1066 , 4870 1G
i don't advice you about very expensive high card cuz i don't advice anyone waste money , cuz DX11 card's come out soon form booth nvidia and ATI , imagine you pay 400$-500$ for an graphic card now and you see the DX11 card's release after 6 months maximum i don't think you like upgrade cuz sell your expensive card at 200$ and pay 300$-400$ to got an DX11 card have same or bit more performance than yours sold card
