rog strix b550-f. want to move my 500gb 980 Pro (os drive) to my bottom M.2 slot, and use the top slot for 2tb 970 evo plus when directstorage is out. i know speeds on the 980 pro will be halved due to pcie 3.0 but will there be any other performance difference. also, can i run these drives without the board's nvme heatsink.

Benchmark Scores Meh benchmarks.
Performance loss be in benchmark programs. you wont notice other wise. It's high sustained speeds that will make them hotter, how hot well that would depend on the cooling and ambient temps.

But a case with good airflow should be perfectly fine, a heatrsink helps just to soak the heat up, but that will not help in the end if the case has terrible airflow.

Some trail and error, keep your eye on the temps under heavy\load usages.

Here's a heatsink i am using on mine, just black.

Although don't that motherboard come with heatsinks for them anyways ?.

they do. but i want to skip them. the top nvme heatsink is in the way of me taking out my gpu, so is my NH-D15S. i'm going to replace it with a NH-U12A tomorrow to have more space.

i will skip the top heatsink, and maybe keep the bottom heatsink. we'll see.

so no performance difference if the 980 Pro runs through the chipset? i know sata 5 and 6 will be disabled but i don't care, not using those.

Your REAL-WORLD experience won't differ much between PCIE3.0 and PCIE4.0 when using a PCIE4.0 SSD. Controller is more important.
Small read/writes is what make your system fly, loading times etc.
DirectStorage and RTX IO will support 3.0 and 4.0 +5.0 later

I would always use a heatsink for high-end M.2 NVME SSD's, they can get pretty hot without and controller will throttle
NAND temp is not what you should be worried about, controller temp is the problem

I have 970 Evo, 970 Evo Plus, 970 Pro, WD SN750 + SN850 and 980 Pro in house and heatsink lowered temps by 20 degree C pretty much, from mid 50s from mid 70s, some of them even peaked at 80 without heatsink depending on placement. So yeah ALWAYS use a heatsink on high-end drives IMO!

cool, gonna place the 980 Pro at the bottom with the heatsink on it and skip the heatsink on the 970 Evo Plus at the top. it's only going to be used for games anyway, and not workstation loads. i don't do that. me being able to take out my gpu is more important than a nvme heatsink.

thanks for the help, any more confirmations that this won't affect real world performance are welcome.

There is a performance difference, but only when you move/copy tens or hundreds of GB sequentially (i.e. big files, not lots of small ones). Most people don't do that often at home.
Also the drives only need the heatsink when writing the same amount of data, which is another rare scenario for home users.

It's all workload dependent, of course, but most users don't need to worry about it.

I am running my own 970 EVO 1TB off the lower m.2. slot (via the b550 chipset) and it runs fine I don't see any noticeable performance issue in my setup check the specs.

I know op talks about the 980 Pro but running it at Gen3 speed is still not bad.

in that case ill invest some cash in a 2tb nvme for my top slot. thank you all for the help

I can post som CDI screens and tests when I get home.

I am at work and I am off in like 4 hours time.

Alright, update, my NH-U12A arrived today and I took the liberty to move the NVMe from the top to the bottom. Absolutely no performance difference except for the expected halving of speed due to PCIe 3.0, other than that, completely identical and no added latency.

Biggest difference is a huge temp drop on the NVMe during gaming, from 56C to 43C.

I'm very happy, the new cooler allows me to very easily mount and screw in a NVMe at the top, so I'll be getting that 2 TB NVMe soon to be ready for DirectStorage. I won't be putting the heatsink on it though, but that's fine since I never actually use it for intense workloads, just for regular gaming.

I know Samsung says the 970 EVO 1TB should have 3500/3300 MB/s Read/Write but I have never seen any of Samsung's numbers match on a drive that's also run Windows 10 Pro and to be honest having 3255/2445 MB/s is fast enough I don't complain with 1Gbit of internet up and down.

Samsung's number most likely include the protocol overhead. It's just like networking: you never get a full gigabit when measuring from within the OS ;)
