Occasional High Pitched Sound

Hi everybody,
recently my 5 year old pc started making this weird sound at around every 3 minutes.
These are the specs:
1 main Samsung Evo 860 SSD
1 Seagate 2 TB HDD
Intel i7 3.6 GHz CPU
Gigabyte z97 HD3 Motherboard
CoolerMaster PowerSupply

You can hear the sound on this link:

Do you have any idea what it might be?

Thats the Seagate hard drive, I'm almost certain its the arm catching on the platter. Unplug the drive and let me know if it goes away. :toast:

Ummm, I see no way an arm can catch on a platter - at least not intermittently. The arm (and read/write head) never even touches the platter(s). If it did, that would mean the arm is physically bent or loose and that would result in alignment issues resulting in significant read errors. It also would likely result in the R/W head crashing into and scraping the platters cutting Grand Canyon sized trenches/scratches (microscopically speaking) in the platters resulting in data loss - if not total drive corruption.

I also don't see how there could be a fairly consistent timeframe for the noise to occur if there was a mechanical issue within the drive. R/W arms are constantly jumping back and forth, back and forth. Not once every ~3 minutes.

Are you 100% sure it is coming from a drive? You might grab a paper towel tube and use that as a stethoscope to see (hear) if you can pinpoint the source of the sound). In some cases, it is necessary to actually pull the drive out of the computer and VERY CAREFULLY leave it dangling outside the case so any sound is easily heard to be coming from the drive (or from within the case). Sounds often seem to reverberate inside and throughout cavernous metal cases, making their source very hard to locate.

In any case, you need to immediately make sure you have a backup of your data.

This sound is very similar to that.
If you are lucky its just a bearing from one of your cooler vents. Check things out carefully and be prepared to backup/replace your drive too.

The problem with drives making noise is they can die tomorrow, or give you several more years of service. But even is not making any noise at all the lesson is the same; maintain current backups.

If me, I would use this an excuse to migrate to a new SSD! ;)

Yes, definitely, I used it as an archive drive, but did the backup weeks ago, just in case :)

I think it’s the Seagate drive, I turned it off and the sound goes away.
I've been building & fixing Pc's for long time now. I recognised the sound. Ive come across it a couple of times.
The drive is on its way out but it may last another year even two although it may corrupt data. I would send it back to Seagate for a replacement.
Glad it helped anyway :toast:

@Bill Thanks for the lesson on hard drives... lmao

As have I. And I recognize the sound too and it sounds like bearings to me, as Voluman previously suggested (and you liked, BTW). Certainly not a R/W arm coming into contact with a spinning platter (speaking of LMAO).

It should be noted such contact could only be verified by thoroughly disassembling the drive and separating the platters (a real PITA, BTW), then inspecting for physical contact and damage! Because, of course, again, it would be impossible for the arm to repeatedly come into contact with the platters in that manner if not damaged. And then, there would be boulder-sized (microscopically speaking) scrapings contaminating the platter's and bearings and subsequent data loss - not good. But of course, since you have built so many computers, with your expertise, you already know that.

errr yeah i do... Ive known the details of a mechanical hard drive for about 20yrs and have followed their little improvements here and there. What is your problem. You owe me an apology if anything.
I knew that sound was his hard drive and i was right. End of. :slap:

I knew that sound was his hard drive and i was right.
Well, I won't hold your obvious youthful lack of experience against you! ;) LOL

Please, I am not trying to argue where. And no apologies are due either way. There was no disputing it was the hard drive.

The issue was the actual fault with the hard drive. As suggested by more than just me, it is much more likely to be bearings making the noise and not a R/W arm "catching" a platter.

All motor bearings will fail - eventually if the drive is kept in service long enough. And there are two motors inside a drive so two chances for failure.

But the R/W arm would never come in contact with a platter(s) unless the drive was subjected to some substantial physical abuse - like being dropped on to a hard floor. There has been no indication that happened.

Now you can keep on insisting the R/W head is somehow "catching" a platter - it does not matter to me. Anyone who has actually disassembled a hard drive would immediately know otherwise for the arm would be bent, and there would be serious alignment and data loss issues. Before we got our hard drive shredder, we had to physically remove and destroy the platters from all discarded drives, then certify via a two-man certification process, the destruction was done.

Have a good day.

You know @Bill_Bright, you make a lot of very informative posts, but I feel like your tone often invites these sorts of... “contests” more often than you’d like. Just my $0.02 in hopes of saving you a few minutes of what seem like regular headaches. Be well and thanks for your contributions!

Well, I certainly don't mean to invite "contests" but hearty debates are good - as long as folks stick with the technical facts. Debating (sans any personal insults) is not arguing - yet some see it as such. And I think that is sad.

That said, since we cannot see facial expressions or actually "hear" the tone of voice, I think when it comes to technical discussions it is upon the reader to NOT interject what they think the tone is and just go by the words being written.

Conversations are two-way streets. Readers must try to understand what the writer is saying, and not read between the lines something not there. And as writers, we must write clearly to avoid misunderstandings - especially in technical writing. I try to do that - obviously not always successful and I apologize for that. I do try to use smilies when I think something might be taken the wrong way, but some still don't get it.

I also note this is a "forum". A forum by definition is an "open venue" where we speak to the crowd. So in that respect, most comments are not one-on-one conversations. So when speaking to the crowd, it is a challenge to not speak over the head of some and at the same time, not insult the experienced with something obvious.

I am a grumpy old retired Air Force Master Sergeant who spent over 20 years working in (literally and figuratively) and around deadly electronics. "Barking out orders" was just a way of life or else someone might be killed. Many, especially those with no formal electronics training, forget or just never think about the fact that anything that plugs into the wall can kill!!! That includes computers. So it is ingrained in me to convey my messages in precise terms. And unfortunately, that may be misinterpreted as arrogance or condescending. I assure all, that is not my attempt.

But I also note part of the problem seen way too often is there are some on this site who see any different viewpoint as a personal affront. That's just nonsense. Some also see their own anecdotal experience with one or two samples as universal proof that establishes some rule. They don't (or won't) see the big picture. :(

To be sure, I spend much of my time here at TPU because of all the diverse and extensive levels of expertise that congregate here! Yes, I come here to help and share what I have learned over the years. But the bonus is, I am constantly learning new things too from the other regulars and helpers here. :) IT is industries within industries. There is always more to learn.

So to all, please do not read into what I say, something I did not say. I do try to choose my words carefully to avoid misunderstandings. And I do hate to be wrong so I do try to verify my facts before posting as I know someone here will call me out, if I am wrong.

Anyway, again, sorry if I offended anyone. Unless I call out by name with a personal insult, no insult was likely intended. It was just me trying to be concise on a technical level. These are technical forums discussing technical topics, after all. Not social chat rooms.

Buddy remember this is a community, a family, and apart from the odd person here and there we all try to keep it friendly.
#ive noticed a bit of bitchiness between members and honestly i hadn't seen anything like that before. Not widespread like it seems to be now.
I hope it blows over and people remember why they're here. To help or get help. There's no room for Ego's... :toast:
Infact i was accused of making sensational posts... I was trying to help is all. In the initial post i was shooting down cods cheating community.
Apparently that meant i couldnt post what fixed the crashing in cold war. We never had that kind of piss taking before. We didnt take liberties with each other if we could help it.
