Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth, Head of Facebook Reality Labs posted this after HTC annouced their new HMD. This looks like an early model of the one in the pictures above.

Yeah, it seems physically smaller which could be great as long as nothing was sacrificed to get there.

There is speculation that a mirror will yield full body tracking FWIW,....

Yeah, so the new screens are supposed to be Micro-Oled like the HTC Vive Flow, but with higher resolution.

Wow, I haven't heard this about using a mirror. That's very interesting. I'm ready for Thursday.

I'm patiently waiting for Thursday to see what I'm going to upgrade my Rift CV1 to... would be happy with Quest 2 but want to see what (if anything) is going to be announced before making the final decision.

Oh man, I'm ready for Thursday. I'm still hoping Valve announces the Index 2 right before Connect, but I don't expect to be able to afford it.. haha

I can say with out a doubt the jump for CV1 to Quest 2 is amazing. You will enjoy either one you pick.

The PiMax Reality 12k series is looking like one of the most advanced VR HMDs you can get but it’s Q4 2022 and ~$2399 USD. That’s a long wait (about a year) and fairly expensive for the average consumer.

I doubt we’ll see anything as advanced from Oculus on the 28th.

Yeah Pimax has always looked interesting once they got into wide FOV, but price has always kept me away.. lol I can remember their early HMD's were really bad knockoffs and sub $300. It's good to see them push VR, but as good as this HMD looks I still think Valve's next one will be better. I was hoping someone would have made a new thread for this one. I will be interested to see if anyone from TPU gets it. I might make it today. I just need to watch the event first.

I don't really know a lot about it other than it's 12k and comes with a standalone pc and uses wigi 6.0 to connect to it. I don't even know what displays it uses, but if it's not Micro-Oled then it won't stand a chance against what's coming. Just from the pictures I've seen pretty much tells me it doesn't us them. It will be interesting to see which content creators get one. I hope they send one to VRGamerdude. He has really been pushing the 8kx they sent him.

Yeah, PiMax has always struck me as ambitious and audacious but falling short with no spit and polish. I always thought of them as a tweaker’s VR HMD for people that want to futz with it as much or more then they want to play games.

HTC Vive has mentally checked out of the consumer market unfortunately.

Its reasonable to still expect great things from Valve so I too hope the successor to the current Index is a sizable upgrade and a force to be reckoned with.

Right now, the Oculus Quest 2 still seems to be the quasi perfect balance between price and performance for a modern VR HMD. Face tracking, eye tracking and full body tracking is something I’m guessing Oculus can get into consumer hands before PiMax’s announced Q4 2022 date or at least close to it.. Oculus can probably do it for less too.

I found a bit of info on the Pimax.
Pimax Reality will use dual 5620×2720 200Hz HDR LCD panels with Mini LED backlighting and a quantum dot layer.

Looks interesting but to much money for me to spend so i will save for the Quest 2.

Yeah Pimax can't compete with FB in price vs performance. Same goes for HTC as well. FB is using the same approach old console companies used in the past with selling consoles at cost or a lose to sell software and to get their product in peoples hands. Sony and MS did it to get into the console race. The only bad part is when FB is in a position to sale for a profit like Sony and MS does now, but at that point there will be enough competition to find something cheaper.

As nice as the Pimax looks the price is just over the top for most people so my next headset will be the Quest 2 or the Pro version depending on price.

I have a Rift s and as good as it is i prefer the Quest 2 much more :)

I agree, I'm finding myself not using my Rift S and just putting on the quest 2 and playing.

With VR HMDs like the Oculus Quest 2 there are a number of little things that can go into a cost effective upgrade. Coming from the original Oculus Rift and going to the Oculus Quest v1, I always believed the controller tracking was a downgrade. With the Oculus Rift you had the best mainstream tracking you could get next to Steam VR / Lighthouse tracking. So improved occlusion free controller tracking would be a boon for something like the Quest Pro.

Better displays (panel technology / resolution) could yield dividends as well.

Smaller and lighter sure would be nice too but better weight distribution would be an improvement as well.

Body tracking and face tracking are kind of checkmark improvements that likely won’t mean too much to most people just wanting to play VR games. Eye tracking has the potential to really be taken advantage of in tangible ways to gamers with respect to better foveated rendering. The eyes could also be used as an addition in game controller with eye tracking.

Tomorrows the day, Oculus Connect. I can hardly wait!

I hear that orders will be taken a day or so after the event and that availability / shipping will be sometime in early November. Kind of glad I waited now,...... :)
