interesting boast by amd, but from the specs I've seen on the 6970 I don't see it being much more than 20% faster than the 5870 which would place it smack dab in between the 480 and 580.

though if they do pull it off it would be epic as it would mean the 6970 performs on par with the 5970 while having less heat, power requirements and fan noise.

Hmmm ... 6870 had 30% less shaders than a 5870 but was only 10% Slower .... and if 6970 has the same amount of SPs (1600) then it should be at least 15-20% faster (than 5870) .... and ... if it has more than 1600 SPs .. then I think there is a good chance that it beats the GTX 580 ... :)

For some reason I have a big feeling that the HD6970 will beat the GTX 580, I don't know why, could be my old ATI fanboyism:laugh: but i guess we will just have to wait and see:toast:

Prices have gone up because demand is high and supply is low. Either that or it's just a classic case of price gouging.

... I am not red nor green; I just speak my mind; and what I think is that AMD has been surprised by the unexpected launch and performance of the GTX 580, as everyone else have ... we were only expecting a dual GF104 Chip or a fully-enabled GF104 GPU from nVidia and no one was expecting a "proper" GF100 (i.e. GF 110) chip GPU, but nVidia managed to keep a good secret long enough to surprise competition. Now, the ball is in AMD's court; AMD has had a year now since they launched the 5870 & 5970 and has no excuse in my opinion not to build single-chip GPUs that can outperform the GTX 580, but if they couldn't, that'll definitely mean that 2011 is going to be nVidia's year, especially that the GTX 560 & GTX 570 should be on the way ...

You're kidding? (or complimenting my point in a weird manner?)

It's the right graph for the point I was making: on those charts the cards can only be compared to the card that is benched, as only that card is the baseline. So in the chart I posted it cannot be said that HD5970 is 100% faster than GTX480. You can only say "GTX 480 was 500% faster than GT 430" (fixed) and "HD 5970 was 600% faster than GT 430", as you pointed out.

So in the GTX580 chart you posted, like you said HD5970 is 8% faster, and you can say that because the GTX580 is the baseline, but the GTX580 is NOT 13% faster than GTX480, you cannot say that, because the GTX480 is not the baseline. You can say "GTX480 is 13% slower" or do the math and say "GTX580 is 15% faster".

If anyone has a difficulty understanding this, let's just use a card with a more pronounced difference, the HD5830 which is showing a 50% in wahdangun's graph. The GTX580 is 50% faster? Nope. The GTX580 is twice as fast, the HD5830 is 50% slower or 50% of GTX580's performance.

hmmm sorry maybe i'm not clear enough but i think what i mean was you was saying that HD 5970 was 200 % faster and i said its wrong because your graph was based on GTX 430

nah i call that slide BS, because GTX 580 perform really close to GTX 480 so if they up the performance then they can sacrifice the GTX 580 sale, maybe they will use GTX 480 core and downclock it a bit

I could see the 6970 at least being on par if not beating the 580 if you look at it as the 6870 being a midge range card but it hangs with the 5870 pretty well which Is ATI's best single gpu for the moment. So if they can boost the performance of there high end cards as they did with there midrange. Even if the 6970 falls between the 480 and 580 lets face it, its still over kill on most all games unless maybe for the people that are doing 3D gaming.

Hmm....

4 weeks today and if the cards are out for testing we'll have results. First time in ages we'll be able to compare which card to buy.

What am I going to buy W1zz? Tell me! Tell me!!!!!!

Performnce must not come at the cost of noise. I'm assuming power draw between the two cards will be comparable if their performance is similar.

Uh, if people are paying the price, then it's not gouging. It's what the market will bear.

I won't pay over $240 for a 6870, and wish others wouldn't as well.

But they don't put them at that price if no one is willing to pay it.

All I can say is, glad I got mine before the price inflation. It's a shame to see the 6870 hit $299 already... that was fast. Guys remember the 5850's at launch? $249, how long did that last... about a week. Cheapest we saw a 5850 after launch week was $279. Pretty crappy if the 68xx follows that same trend, sure looks like it is and will though.

Some are still around $240 but there all sold out most places. Wish I would have bought 2 at same time but wanted to test 1 out 1st. I also refuse to pay a jacked up price, so 2nd will have to wait.

At this point, I'm going to wait for the 6970 and 6950. Hopefully they are priced competitively and will drive the 6800 prices back down. The one with the best bang for buck will be the one I get.

Unless they're all over priced. Then I'll have to consider nvidia GTX 460s. ;)
