You've got so many options for an upgrade that it's unbelievable. Waiting for a new Radeon 6xxx card isn't going to disappoint, even in a worst case scenario. You'll see a massive improvement in performance even with a low end 6xxx series card.

uhh not the 63xx card that has already surfaced... lol, I'd say he'll want to at the very least aim at a ~6670 or higher to beat out his aging 8800 GPU.

considering a 5870 is already roughly the performance of 4870 CF/4870X2, you should be quite safe with a 6870 blowing them away, not to mention all the benefits of single card over 2.

well it depends it seems that AMD is not going to use the same scheme of doubling the sp's and hoping for double the performance, it seems they are redesigning the SP's now, which is good to see.

yeah tahts excellent stuff you posted before, the redesigned SP's might give them the edge they need without needing to double up at all, hec depending on how awesome they are they might even need less!

maybe amd will change the way the shaders and shader clocks operate. like having the choice to run shader clocks independant from core clocks. that would be nice. that is one of my biggest quarrels with ati cards no ability to alter shader clocks they are locked to the core. my second biggest quarrel is I have never seen a ati card with more then 256 bit memory bus but nvidias do, that puzzles me. IF they were to change that and it was possible to use more the 256 it may be beneficial. still I cannot wait to see real proven numbers and pics of the 6XXX cards.

well you have to remember OC101 it was proven the 5870 wasnt bandwidth starved as many claimed it was instead it was ROP starved as Binge and others discovered. I highly doubt the 6800 series will be any different bandwidth was never the issue nor the bus size end of the day its an entire package and you have to give something to gain something somewhere else ill be happy with better MINIMUM frame rate performance and better xfire scaling thats all thats really needed. Thats ATis biggest issue that im made about i see shittier Nvidia cards in terms of performance bracket keep higher minimum frame rates in 3/4s of todays games that 90fps average is ruined when u get stutters of 11fps off and on id gladly trad 100fps avg for a 50fps minimum in all games eitherway time will tell and soon enough performance data will leak from trusted sources

Yeah I'm with CrazyEyes

I always have Vsync enabled so my frame rate is locked at 75 max.

Anything over that means nothing to me until I can get a monitor that runs over 75 Hz.

Is it true that the 6xxx series is not getting a die shrink?

I read somewhere that they were planning to git down to 28 nm with it...

And then I read that it's not

Perhaps a family refresh will see that?

Early adopters might end upif that happens!

because TSMC cancled 32nm bulk GPUs were left high and dry on die shrink so ATI mixed evergreen with new designs from the 7000 series to make a hybrid aka the 6000 series think of the 6000 series like the 4770 was to the hd4000 series its a test run a faster stronger more efficient design with roughly the same power envelope as its predecessor ATi is basically squeezing as much performance from the 40nm process as it can to hold out till 28nm bulk is ready to go

myself, Binge and Benetanegia did a massive amount of looking into this, and your right, it was not bandwidth starved at all.

I found the thread, first link is the whole thing, second two are the numbers concering performance with a massive change in memory bandwidth, it's all a very VERY interesting read.

theres even more posts where I underclocked the memory to prove my point, I ran 40+ consecutive benchmarks that day... but I didnt feel like trawling the entire thread just to fine it, who knows tho, maybe I'll edit if i do.

yup and if you remember by keeping my memory stock i got 30mhz more out of the core on stock volts and that made up for any difference the memory loss gave me ah those were good times lol

Not really sure if you guys have talked about the speed of the 6870 yet, but by doing a little math, if ATI keeps the shader area the same space as the 5870 on the 6870, they should be able to get 400 shaders vs the current 320 now. 320x5 way equals 1600, 400x4 way equals 1600. If everything is linear (which its not) that should be roughly a 25% boost to the 6870 series without even changing the die size. Pretty sure this has been brought up but my 2 cents imo

I hadn't thought of it that way.... very interesting indeed.

I guess we'll soon see if its resdesigned shaders at all, and if so, redesigned shaders ftw?
