It is up to 30% faster. up to is not the same as average. On some games at certain settings it is easily 20-30% faster. The 30% claim comes from Vantage, I think, and that boost comes from the doubled FP16 capabilities on the texture units.

W1zzard's average numbers are not accurate to say how much faster a card can be, because many games, especially the ones using old engines (World of Warcraft, UT3, Supreme Commander) do not scale properly and that skewes the results for faster cards a bit. There's no any better metric on the net to say which is the average performance of a card than W1zzard's numbers, because tey do represent what the majority of people will get, but it's not a perfect one to prove/disprove "up to X% faster claims". I don't know if I have explained myself well.

Also even in Wizzard's average numbers it is 15% faster at 1920x1200 and 16% faster at 2560x1600 and even at "all resolutions" it is 11% faster. You have to divide the highest number by the lowest number, you can't just substract them because the chart is relative to only one card. Otherwise, HD5970 is 107% faster than the GTX480?

http://tpucdn.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_430/images/perfrel_1920.gif

that was wrong graph because its realtive performance to GT 430, so conclusion from that graph was

GTX 480 was 400% faster than GT 430 and
HD 5970 was 600% faster than GT 430

now this is the right graph :

you can see its relative performance for GTX 580

so the HD 5970 is still 8% faster than GTX 580

Fwiw Anand did a follow up to their article that shows the difference between the 480 and 580 to be ~10% max with equal clocks.

kinda hard to understand what exactly is being said here with comments like "wahaha I press the 50xe Toilet water does " "Is the current year to produce the feces of the most short-lived single card Wong" and "After all, the wheels can not stand to be some people began to throw toss a flash bang"

does the smile mess up the link or is google translate really that bad?

No, "dragon poo wheels" clearly means that 6970 is faster. Please brush up on your Chineese. Kthnx.

here is a comment"Listen WG_Baby that the game performance by an average 7% faster than the 580, pay attention to the performance did not say the game is DX ah few games, DX9 (a few DX10) A card's strengths has always been Oh, DX11 (especially Tessellation) is not clear. 我提醒她注意这点之后,她便不理我跑了去大概又发小姐气了。 I reminded her attention to this point, she would ignore me to run around and sent Miss breathing. 说我黑A Say that I am black A"

from where the smile popped ?, really i dont know.Maybe its fault of google translate

Reaching your left retina.
that was wrong graph because its realtive performance to GT 430, so conclusion from that graph was

GTX 480 was 500% faster than GT 430 and
HD 5970 was 600% faster than GT 430

now this is the right graph :
http://tpucdn.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_580/images/perfrel_1920.gif

you can see its relative performance for GTX 580

so the HD 5970 is still 8% faster than GTX 580

You're kidding? (or complimenting my point in a weird manner?)

It's the right graph for the point I was making: on those charts the cards can only be compared to the card that is benched, as only that card is the baseline. So in the chart I posted it cannot be said that HD5970 is 100% faster than GTX480. You can only say "GTX 480 was 500% faster than GT 430" (fixed) and "HD 5970 was 600% faster than GT 430", as you pointed out.

So in the GTX580 chart you posted, like you said HD5970 is 8% faster, and you can say that because the GTX580 is the baseline, but the GTX580 is NOT 13% faster than GTX480, you cannot say that, because the GTX480 is not the baseline. You can say "GTX480 is 13% slower" or do the math and say "GTX580 is 15% faster".

If anyone has a difficulty understanding this, let's just use a card with a more pronounced difference, the HD5830 which is showing a 50% in wahdangun's graph. The GTX580 is 50% faster? Nope. The GTX580 is twice as fast, the HD5830 is 50% slower or 50% of GTX580's performance.

Most 5970's in the states are going at $630 and up.....Newegg has the Saphire Hemlock 5970 going at $508  .....cheapest GTX580 I've seen was sub $500 at Tigerdirect I think........Newegg has some 580's for $509 after promo discount.

I agree with E.

Obvious statements like "Words can be said that so the people who re-Y it?", "Wheels are all fishing ... ... ... ... ... ... haha", and "Vest constantly updated, to see Touyunnaozhang's or consumers" really tell you all you need to know about the 6970. Everything is very clear now.

So, according to Guru3d, the 69xx series is deleayed until December 13th. At least that is the date that the NDA lifts. Fine by me, I should have enough saved for two by then.

For two 6970's I figure $700 dollars on the low side (not likely) and $1000 dollars on the higher side (most likely), could be more though.

Pfft - my impatience is strong. But i'll hold out till then. I can't risk buying a great card (GTX 580) only to find out four weeks later a greater card is out. Note i said i can't risk. Not saying the 6970 will be better but i can't risk it. I know there are others out there like me. i.e. slightly fickle.

But if it slips again from the new NDA, f*ck it, I'm going green.
