AM3 (+) boards and Phenoms are cheap enough, but not to the point I'd advise buying one if you didn't have it already

It does also depend what board you end up with. The older Crosshairs still command a premium.

Nice results! Seems like there is no way around Windows XP if I want to be competitive in SuperPI... Ugh, I hate switching OS back and forth and I don´t have an iso ready. Maybe I´ll try to improve on Win 7.

Was done last night with ambients temps outside.
Since my benching area is out in the benchshack whatever ambients are present is what my coolant temps would be or very close.

That sounds like the perfect place for a benchtable to be. I would love to try that during winter with sub zero ambient temps. Sadly it´s spring now and I did not realize in time that I could theoretically set up my radiator on the kitchens windowsill.

Edit: To be clear I do mean outside of this competition, I know we agreed to stay above 0°C.

Ouf, that is a decent FSB. I wish I could get there but I found my limit at 540MHz... ~~I´m not sure if memory is failing me~~ (Edit: It is not the RAM, got it to 560MHz no problem on 400 strap) or the board. I switched to some Ballistix Tracer and it went from stable to not posting between 540 and 541 on both my Kingston sticks and the Ballistix. Tested on different CPUs so I think the board wants no more :/ Higher NB voltage results in straight up no post with bios reset required, lower voltage just wont post and triggers the default settings.
Turns out my Formula II seller was a scammer, atleast I got my money back. I should have known better at the price of 40€ but it was worth a shot with PayPal.
Seems like I have to convince the P5Q-E to do more somehow. Maybe some additional caps could help?

I´m going to give it a shot, I just remembered I´m on the Xeon modded one from ket. Was testing my X5270s, now that I´m back on the E8300 this might cause trouble. It does say "unkown CPU detected, update Bios" on my E8000s. I just didn´t really care because it still worked to this point. And I had a short issue with the bios not applying the settings I chose. It booted with 44X FSB even if I had 45X set in bios but that was just once so I thought nothing of it.

Don't quit - The only way to figure it out is by trying because while there is no guarantee of success in trying, it is guaranteed you'll never get it done if you don't.
BTW do note my bus speed was about 525 with those runs so you're still in the game.

I spent hours on my 600 FSB stuff today and had to get help from two of my OC buddies. I’d run through R15, restart to save the profile, and then it wouldn’t even make it back into Windows.

It’s all a learning curve.

Ram quantity is hurting you. Need a pair of 1 or 2 gig sticks.
