okay heard all this great stuff about Windows 7 and I'm not impressed

Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and Windows 7 64 seem to me to be almost identical with Windows 7 using a smaller memory kernel. I have both running side by side and Windows 7 is not noticeably different and Vista works just as-well as long as you have 4 gb of ram or better. I think we have a tiny bit of memory usage tweaking and thats it, nothing is wrong with Vista in it current form that was all B.S. do you agree. I'm not saying Windows 7 is bad but it's not worth the upgrade (if it's a upgrade at all)

it takes a bit of use before you see the changes. on the face it does look very similar, but it is definitely revamped and updated.

i don't know what to say though, if you don;t notice it you don't.

I'd have to agree with you for the most part trt740. Some of the newer features are nice and all but not much different to Vista.
I ran Vista Ult x64 for about 2 years and did not have many problems with it, well certainly not anymore than I had with XP. So far touch wood Win7x64 Pro seems to be going good. The only real probs I have had with it were to do with my new X-Fi Titanium Pci-e card but that was more due to Creatives drivers, which have now been sorted.
Do I prefer Win 7 to Vista, well yes but only marginally so.

The rest... was fluff to make your experience more enjoyable. And MS pockets fuller.

I refused to use Vista becasue I talked to too many people who were having trouble with it, and because of the arrogance of Microsoft to issue and OS that needed a chipset that didn't exist yet.

The few times I did use vista I didn't like it.

I now use Win7 and I'm shocked that I've had zero problems. This is the OS they should have issued 5 or 6 years ago...one that is backward and forward compatible.

But I guess that's all moot since you don't see any difference.

Vista's Networking is still broken. It works when it wants to and couldn't care less about proper functionality. Win 7 is not much difference on the surface, but as stated earlier, under the hood is a whole different engine.

That's true. I mean there is Mac OS X and Linux with various windows managers which run on x86 hardware but while not an apples to oranges comparison it somehow doesn't really seem apples to apples either.

Maybe 7 will be too after they sort out some compatibility issues with games that are older but for some wacky reason I can't get Quake 4 to work on one of my Windows 7 systems but it works great on my Vista system even though when you install it there is a compatibility warning. I have had Vista since the beginning and man it was a bit tricky at first and driver support was terrible but now with everything working as it should for me I simply will not complain about Vista at all. Well it still takes forever to start up but that is so minor I really don't care. Vista was the only way to go triple and quad crossfire so I went for it as soon as I could. Gaming performance is awesome with triple 4850s and quad core processors. Its like a car that runs on premium gas. The potential is there for rocket performance but don't think that 87 octane is going to be okay. And if you just wanted a grocery getter than you could stick with XP.

I'm not sure I follow you, they game identically as far as I can tell. All Windows 7 is, is Vista re branded after the bugs were out of it, with a few memory tweaks so older less memory heavy machines can handle it. Now with the patches I can hardly tell them apart.

I gotta say my time with 7 x64 has been top notch, I came from a solid Vista 64 SP2 install tho. I can't say I noticed a night and day difference, but I liked the taskbar and how I could manage things, I also appreciated some of the smaller touches, the networking, and I also noticed a much improved USB transfer rate to and from my 16GB usb stick. Along with that the odd pause I'd get in Vista when trying to delete shortcuts of un-installed programs was gone. It was more that going to 7, it seems they had fixed a bunch of little things that made me appreciate using it more. I got a good deal back when 7 was new, otherwise there's no way I'd pay what the asking price is now if I already had Vista in all honesty. At the end of the day 7 has some extra polish that is more appreciated, but as-far-as speed or hugely noticable differences in performance...nada. I game a ton, and honestly I'm pretty sure both OSes perform about the exact same...out of the two though I do prefer 7, but that wasn't an instant thing...I had to use it for a while and get used to it (though the feel is Vista there are some quirks)...now I prefer it and sold off my Vista.

i dont know...open up like 3 big programs and then run a 3d video game. watch how smoothly it alt-tabs between all programs and how quickly you can navigate through programs with no hiccups. that is on "older" hardware too.

I ran it on this machine and overall it was quicker than XP, but other point being Nvidia didnt provide proper GART drivers so no gaming under it, At Least Intel, Via and SIS provide proper GART drivers for older machines under WIndows Vista and 7

W7 is Vista plus a service pack and a fresh face.

For gaming et all 7 is a bit lighter, but i like the beauty of Vista.

Granted I never used Vista really as a main OS, either did XP or 7 when that was in pre build stages, but the one thing that really sets it apart from Vista is that at launch it was a proper OS and showed a step in the right direction for MS in creating a stable computing experience.

Hell, I tried all the OS's that might make sense. No luck. That is why it is good to have many computers to choose from. I have one that has Windows 7 32 bit and XP 32 bit for maximum compatibility. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I don't think any machine should have 1 gig or less these days and if they do they should be running XP.
