part of the problem is the sensors are more accurate towards tjmax, than at idle.

The fact you believe you are idling 2c above ambient should tell one something.

My advice to you is just settle for it. You got a bad chip. Buying better cooling won't make any difference short of going sub zero with a chiller or phase change system. The performance gain from 4.4 versus what might satisfy you, average chip overclock is say ... 4.6? 4.7?, is not really dramatic. In fact you wouldn't notice. I've been there with a bad retail chip and bought a binned second hand chip instead, result was nice for benchmarks and day to day but was it worth it money wise? probably not. 3770K I have will do 4.8 on air. I hardly notice a difference between the stock and 4.8 except on a few games.

Your replacement might be just as bad. I guess it couldn't get worse. Then again, it could. I tried for a few chips near the end of Ivy Bridge's production and they were all crap, each worse than the last, and worse then the chip you have now. You might end up with a chip that can't even get past turbo, idk.

@AntDeek have you tried ram overclock instead? Your chip might shine in other ways, try to find them.

edit: also you may have a bad motherboard for overclock. They can vary just like chips do.

I'm talking about core temps, well my CPU core temps while playing GTA V highest core 40c max, at a 20.5 ambient temp so yeah I think these temps are about right,
if the cores were idling at 30, the load temp would be around 50 in my case...

I have the CPU fan spinning at fixed 1000rpm (scythe fan), even when idle, I like to keep it cool. :cool:

Using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut as TIM. During summer the temps aren't over 50s.

So I am stable at 4.5 if I allow the voltage to go to 1.31. None of the workers stop anymore in Prime 95, and wPrime can run 1024M indefinitely. Ram is still at 3000.

Side note: Last night I was playing with the ASUS AI SUITE, and messing with CPU line load and phase power. I have since uninstalled the program, and reset bios to optimized defaults, any chance of those settings lingering? the app itself didn't have a default key.

Doesn't prime 95 damage skylake? I thought for all releases after Haswell, stability testers were advised to use AIDA instead.

I don't use prime anymore for stress testing, just Aida64, the CPU load from this is more realistic (comparable to when you would be gaming) then prime.

again, sensors are inaccurate at idle, so it doesn't always translate that way.

But you are spot on that if your ambient was 20c then went to 25c you temps would raise that same 5c all around.
