My brother bought an old m17x alienware laptop for 450$ usd and i wanna know if he got ripped off ?

Whats wrong about what he said? also, they dont just come with C2D/C2Q later models had support for 2nd and 3rd gen i5/7's and GTX 8 series GPU's, I've seen some with some decent specs, upto 16GB RAM upgraded GPU's, SSD's etc. Without knowing the specs of the one in question you can't say for certainty what it is or isn't worth.

I agree with MrPotatoHead. You cannot say he is wrong - you don't know all the facts. If someone is happy with their purchase, it isn't wrong. And you can't cherry pick one example configuration (that may not apply) out of many possibilities and say someone is wrong either - especially after you already agreed with me in your post #4 where I explained, depending on several factors, it is not a rip-off. So you're just contradicting yourself.

Again, we don't know the full specs or condition of this machine. So it is just wrong of you to declare someone else is wrong based on your "guess" as to the exact model and on your own "what if" scenario that may not even apply here.

It may very well be a rip-off. But it could very well have been a fair deal too.

only you mentioned a c2d e6800 whilst disregarding everyone elses comments, and the top end models are worth that to some people as you wouldnt be able to do anything on a new laptop for $450 let alone game and have 16GB RAM, SSD, and a decent(ish) GPU as some of them have regardless of the age of them. (later models are not 10 years old btw, again this is what you have mentioned along with the e6800 debacle) not too mention the build quality and extras you get on them being high end for the time so a very good condition one that has been upgraded could go for that kind of money.

• M17x-R2 (Discontinued) - 2010 Revision of the M17x, adding support for Intel i5 and i7 processors, dual MXM 3.0B graphic cards.
• M17x-R3 (Discontinued) - 2011 Revision of the M17x, changes from aluminium chassis to a simplified plastic design, 3D Ready through a 120 Hz screen. Removes Dual-GPU capability.
• M17x-R4 (Discontinued) - 2012 Revision of the M17x, updated with Windows 8, Intel Ivybridge Processors and Nvidia GeForce 600 Series or the AMD Radeon HD 7970M.

3rd gen intel is long in the tooth as is a gtx 680. and thats rev 4

ive updated my post before to include revisions. there is nothing there that isnt outdated 2012 is the last revision and its coming on 8 years old. $450 USD could have been better spent imo if OP came here BEFORE his bro made the purchase. Uninformed purchases are the worst, hence my going to discord and amd vangaurd for my build advice.

Agreed on quality but the hardware inside is outdated even on the 2012 revision.

My daughter has a i7 2000 series with gtx 560 asus Rog and it has 16gb ram... It's slow as shit.... Cpu and gfx from 2013 backwards will have issues with most newer games.... Again all of this is pointless unless OP specifies what revision was purchased. Even if it had an ssd I don't think it would do to well in 2019

Oh yeah, absolutely. I definitely wouldn't pay that price for one, but I just thought the decent build quality was worth mentioning at least.

Stating your opinion is fine. But when a "technical" opinion, if is fine only "IF" it is based on established fact and if stated as an opinion. Your statement was neither. You said xtreemchaos was "wrong". He wasn't wrong. He simply said it was not a rip off if the brother was happy with the deal - and that's true. Then you tried to justify your statement by cherry-picking a lessor configuration when that information was not yet known - and, as it turns out, was not applicable anyway.

For all we know, the previous owner of the notebook might have modified or upgraded the notebook too. It might now have 32GB of RAM and a SSD instead of the old hard drive. But you decided no matter what, he got ripped off.

We get that you feel it was a bad deal - but you decided that without having all the information. And we still don't have it all. For example, here are the specs for the M17x R3. As seen in those specs, there were still several CPU options available. The fact is, we still don't know exactly which i7 is in that notebook. We don't even know what OS is currently on it.

@frank30fps - Thanks for providing more information but the "facts" are, we still don't have all the information. It is my "opinion" however, that your brother did NOT get "ripped off", nor did he make a "bad" deal - assuming the notebook works and is fully functional. That said, it is also my opinion that only your brother can decide if he got a "great" deal or not. It is my "guess" that he got a "fair" deal.

As I mentioned above, I would do some research to see what $450 will get you today and see how that compares to that M17x R3 as it is currently configured.

well i certainly dont need 30000 words every post to explain myself. Im allowed my opinion based on what info was given, Im not the OP, therefore, its not really my responsibility to go digging for specific specs for someone's rig. Paying $450 USD for a 7 year old laptop is not a wise investment, VLIW is outdated and no longer supported on current AMD drivers. The only saving grace is the i7. AMD or intel current APUs can certainly beat a 6870 mobile
