Hi
I have some old computer parts that I am going to use so my son can play some old games that will not run on W10. I have some choices that I would appreciate some feedback on. I have a P4 630 HT with a AGP ATI HD 4670 and 3 Gb memory and a P4 D 945 with a 8800 GTS 640 and 4 Gb memory. Taking into consideration CPU bottlenecks etc which do you think would be the better option? The system will have WXP on it and he will be playing COD 1 & 2, Farcry, MOH etc. Thanks.

Shame you can't use the 4670 with the pentium d as that would be the best combo imo

Thanks for that info. Would the Pentium 4 HT bottleneck the HD 4670 too much? As well would the Pentium D bottleneck the 8800 GTS a lot? I have two old monitors one 1280x1024 and the other 1680x1050. Thanks.

Maybe and maybe, it's hard to know because that systems are old now. Test it yourself with Afterburner, watch how high the GPU usage is when playing (also CPU usage).

A true dual core is better than a single core with hyperthreading and I'm sure the 4670 is a lot newer than the 8800gts and probably has more ram? Not to mention probably half the power draw, lower heat and noise etc

Both Boards support Pentium D
So it comes down to the Graphics Card 1Gig HD 4670 Amd or GTS 640(pcix )

I would go for Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI LGA 775
P4 D 945 with a 8800 GTS 640 and 4 Gb memory
Reasons
Its a DDR2 Motherboard with SLI upgradeability

Best option so far, dunno if adding more ram is an option ?

seems legit, but stil vote for the mentioned combo...

Both Boards support Pentium D (in fact both board support a Quad)
So it comes down to the Graphics Card 1Gig HD 4670 Amd or GTS 640(pcix )

I would also look for a cheap quad CPU for it
fair enough!

I remember my P4D 940 doing over 4Ghz easy, so don't be shy with the overclocking. That's what it took to match my stock Athlon 64 X2 at 2Ghz.

Thanks guys, Pentium D/ 8800GTS then. I will have to get a better cooler if I am overclocking. Any suggestions, nothing too expensive though. Thanks.

See your in funnel web spider central and its hot there you should invest in something like a cooler master EVO212 and with extra fan for a push pull config

edit
The 4670 is better than the 8800gts does that combo not work?

his HD 4670 is AGP the Board he is going with is SLI (eg PCIx16 ) so it will not fit

Note should he wish to sell that HD 4670 he would get GOOD MONEY for it on EBAY
its the Fastest AGP Card with the max memory of any AGP CARD and they still get good money S/H

My mate had a P4 3.2GHz with HT skt 478 with a 7600GT and that CPU bottle necked that card so very good chance your 8800GTS will need more powerful CPU to run it better in games.

Thanks guys. Actually problem solved now lol. The power supply in the P4 HT blew out so I am selling the HD 4670 on Ebay and using the Pentium D with 880GTS now.
