Hi guys,
i was wondering if its worth investing in some extra RAM for my good'ol HP 420 notebook, its got 2 gigs and its pretty slow, but im not sure if i should get another set of 2 gigs or just a new 4 gigs and remove the old ram, it supports a lot of capacity but i imagine it doesnt need that much. What do you think is best?
In regards to the GPU it has an integrated intel, maybe i could get an ATI card for it to have better graphics, not sure if it would be a good idea, or if ill be able to find one.
id appreciiate your help on this upgrade

What do you mean by scrap, you mean discard it?

There's no Finding an ATi card for that thing. Even if you did it wouldn't support it anyway. If it has a pci express card slot though you could buy or build your own GPU dock and run whatever card you wish within reason. 4 or 8gb of ram would help with everyday usage

More memory and an SSD is about the only things you can do.

I'd go for adding a 2GB stick, so it's running 4GB in dual channel mode. It would be cheaper if you're really cash strapped. Although, it would probably be best to save your money for a new(or newer) unit....I like old computers and laptops....but this one is really long in the tooth. If your forced to hang onto it for awhile, then I'd agree with Frick...an old SSD would really help it out. You might be able to pick up a used Intel X-25M or 320 series for cheap.

I'd normally also add a cpu upgrade as well, but really....it's not worth the trouble at this point. Especially when Sandy/Ivy Bridge and even now Haswell laptops are going for dirt cheap on ebay.

Good luck with whatever you do....:),

Laptops like that are often given free. With good luck someone may give few beers in exchange.

I have an even slower laptop as a dvd player and it does that job just fine (since my PAL consoles don't play movies from other than region 2). For other things I use my desktop PC or tablet.
