Hi everyone.
I'm repairing a PC here, as stated the rear audio isn't working... but not literally. Here's the thing: only the green port seems to be dead, the other two (blue in, pink mic) are working perfectly, and so does the front case connectors.

Mind this might be ancient hardware for some here but the owner is using it every day and can't afford a new computer, this is where I come in to try and fix the issue since he admitted other technicians simply wanted to add an expensive sound card to overcome the issue.

The mobo is an Asrock 775Dual-VSTA paired with a C2D E6300 and 2GB DDR2-667 memory, and the best: Windows 2000, SP4 and all.

I tried going into the BIOS and forcing the onboard audio to Enabled, it did nothing, unplugged the front jacks and nothing. Went thru every Windows audio setting, reinstalled drivers and nothing, also tried forcing 4.0 sound to test the jacks and the blue one is able to work as an output and there's some electrical noise coming out the green one that's not there when Stereo only mode is enabled.
This is a very old PC but would there be any way to reconfigure the jacks to make the blue output stereo sound rather than the green? My PC can do that but it's like 15 years newer, but maybe it's possible on this older system, who knows
calling all boomers /s :peace:

The jacks aren't damaged at all btw. Anyone's got an idea? PC stays until Fri then goes back, I have PCI sound cards somewhere but I'lll try to use one as the absolute last resort.

I had this problem on an old win98/xp pc, I just rolled with it. There was a way to fix the it, I just didnt. One thing you could try is install the media bundle that comes with the driver package, and they all came with them from that time period. Sometimes the bundle had its own jack config panel.

The issue could be caused by the front panel. Try to put jumpers on pins 5-6 and 9-10 of HD_AUDIO1 :)
If it works, then the issue is caused by the front panel.

Was wondering this as well. I've had that issue come up on older boards. I think at some point it became standard for the audio chip or BIOS to automatically handle that. No guarantee that's the case here; def. worth trying.

@eidairaman1 a cheapie USB Audio Adapter would work too.
I recently *found* a Sabrent one my Dad apparently had bought YEARS ago and was surprised to find it both louder and clearer than the Creative Sound Blaster X-FI USB DAC I had been using for my phone in my car.

Jumpers, jumpers, jumpers... that was it.
Somebody before me had shorted a set of pins labeled SPDIF that should've remained open. Removed the jumper and et voilà everything works, both front and rear

The CD audio connector was loose as well, that wasn't the problem but now the CD audio works as well!
