But the cpu can get the blame? It seems strange, the VGA is on the motherboard (on-board). The problem is that the VGA on-board does not display the bios management. The problem is that!
Clearly when I use the vga on-board the jumper activation is right. I also tried with an external graphics card but nothing (PCI Express 8X). In this case jumper for no VGA on-boad.

The Xeon 5120 does not have onboard graphic capabilities, you will need to add a graphics card to enable a display.

An example of a server, clearly not recently, that uses the XEON X5120 is then HP Proliant ML350 G5 (using one Xeon 5120 1.86GHz). This computer have graphics with a built-in VGA.

The anomaly of my motherboard Supermicro X7DVL-E depend from some fault by electronics motherboard? However, the motherboard does not report errors (LED e beep) ... I can not understand!!!

This motherboard was first in a server ... maybe now that I want to put it on a workstation that has "Enchanted" :) If there is not VGA (on-board or external) I can not use the BIOS management.

The specifications are:

- Motherboard Supermicro X7DVL-EX7DVL-E (rev. 1.21)

- One CPU XEON installed: X5120 (1.86GHz)

- One DIMM 2GB installed:
NANYA NT2GT72U4NB1BN-3C 2GB.2Rx4.PC2-5300F-555-11-E2.667.ECC

In addition to this there is only the power supply and CPU cooler. The board is not yet in his case, are just at the beginning ... if everything works then I build the true workstation. The true workstation provides more powerful CPU XEON (two X5460) and more memory (16GB). But it is not useful to buy all the other components if the motherboard does not work! :)

Hello, I also years later I have the same problem with the motherboard Supermicro X7DVL-EX7DVL-E (rev. 1.21). I can not configure the motherboard cause the VGA does not return pictures. My configuration is a Xeon X5120 (only one CPU) and RAM as a single DIMM 2GB (PC2-5300F-555-11). The motherboard does not report errors with led lights or sounds ... everything looks OK but my LCD monitor does not display anything. You "Bo$$" how you solved the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It turned out one of the CPU sockets were faulty on my board, i bought a new one and it posted right up.

try moving the CPU to the other socket, might work fine after that

I use a single CPU into the socket CPU1. This socket seems OK, but I have found that the CPU2 socket has a defect ... a PIN is broken :-( :-( :-( But I do not understand, if the CPU2 is daneggiata and I use the CPU1 because there must be the this same lack of VGA? it 'a mystery ... are two separate things. I read on the web that some "crazy" has welded a PIN broke into a socket 775 ... I might try it myself with my socket 771 CPU2 ... at the end I have nothing to lose :) But back to the problem VGA, when you put yourself in your CPU socket without blemish the VGA worked? I could also try to buy a PCI-E PCI Analyzer Diagnostic Tester for see if the BIOS "Phoenix Bios" to me an error code useful. It can be a good idea? I attach photos of the motherboard (in my home lab) and the defect found in the CPU2 socket (only photos and virtual reconstruction of the defect).

In summary ... the socket 771 CPU1 is OK while the socket 771 CPU2 is damaged. If I use the socket 771 CPU1 I should not have problems and instead the VGA does not work. The motherboard does not send any error signal (light and sound). Maybe I have to provide diagnostic tools :) But do they work?

I have a similar diagnostic tool, and yes they work, biggest hurdle i stumbled on was the user guide which is very badly translated. A degree in Chinreese would be useful. :)

It is a simple two digit display and then a table of faults, definitely worth the low price.

Apart the manual translated badly then the small board works well, it can be really useful to find the fault in a motherboard ... even for my Supermicro. The card that I put the photo, I also found in the web the small manual that I attach to this response.

My CPU is "1.86 GHZ/4M/1066 INTEL XEON 5120 SL9RY Costa Rica '05 3648A716 e4" and the RAM (2GB) in a single DIMM (only one) is "NANYA NT2GT72U4NB1BN-3C 2GB.2Rx4.PC2-5300F-555-11-E2.667.ECC". Attaching photos.

I'm not sure what you can do now. If the board won't post, it's toast.

did you try using the second socket?

YES, reading that piece of manual seems that this diagnostics board is just right for my case ... everything looks OK but the PC does not start :)

Yes, I have already tried to put the CPU in the second socket. Nothing to do, it does not work like putting the CPU on first. Maybe it really is "cooked" this motherboard ... but the thing that I am not convinced it is the absence of reports of errors ... to hear the beep and see the LED seems all OK ... but do not see anything on the screen LCD :)

Yeah, from my experience it did the same thing. Tried clearing the CMOS to get it to post?

I've already done, made the jumper on two pins that are used for this purpose. Then I also tried to remove the battery and then put it back. The last chance and purchase a small diagnostic cards in order to understand which part of the PC hardware locks the boot ... including VGA. Maybe it will just satisfaction ... because then you will be unable to repair :)

The Xeon 5120 does not have onboard graphic capabilities, you will need to add a graphics card to enable a display.

Many supermicros bundle onboard VGAs anyways though, usually a cheap matrox/via/sis chipset thingy. Not sure if that is the case here, but either way I'd grab a third party vid card.

That'd be me too but I don['t drink coffee... Diet Dr. Pepper is my drug of choice.

It's got an ATI chip, however it sounds to me that his issue is terminal

I have already tried an extra graphics card, but the result was the same ... I do not see anything :) I took a based graphics card PCI Express 16X and I turned into 8X with cutting part of the PIN for the slot and then put it in the slot PCI Express 8X of the motherboad SUPERMICRO X7DVL-E. This operation of "cutting PIN" is a very common practice explained in some websites. Have you ever tried it?

And if the problem was the FLOPPY that I never connected to motherboad and so the boot block, possible?

I tried doing that mod, i bent the last pin hence it didn't work
