OMG!! My Intel P3 800MHz CPU fan (FC-PGA Retail Box type) stopped working after putting some (maybe, but I think I put too much) multi-purpose oil into it!! Any suggestions on getting a replacement..? :(

P3's are pretty cheap now. Just buy a new (used probably) p3
I was at RE-PC yesterday (big secondhand pc place) and they had a bunch of P3's from $15-25
You could also just tape a case fan on it.

This is even cheaper: look for an old PSU you don't use anymore, open it and remove the fan, use some super glue to attach it to the HS of your P3 and connect the cables to your old fan connector, and voila! :D

I'm now slapping an usual 5000rpm casing fan on it (which works quite well.. from normal ~55 degrees celcius idle to ~45 degrees).. But I'm thinking of getting a real P3 fan like the ThermalTake Volcano 7 for Socket 370 processors or anything that fits properly to cool as I'm planning to overclock it :D ...

Any other options?

Hmm.. newegg might not be my type.. but now I managed to get my hands on an used Pentium 3 fansink for the 1GHz model (larger than the usual 800MHz fansink, but I think will fit because my friend has one 1GHz machine with the same mainboard) and a Cooler Master thermal paste for around US$ 10..

The question now is how should I install the replacement fansink.. I know the current P3 has a thermal interface material (some white pad between the heatsink and the CPU core) provided by default.. The replacement fan also has some leftover thermal interface material stuck on it.. how should I remove (or is it called lapping?) these material and install my replacement fan to gain maximum heat removal?

BTW, does the Cooler Master thermal paste harden/sticks to the core/memchips after it dries? I'm planning to cut the old P3 800MHz heatsink up and fit to my graphic cards RAM..

no that paste does not bond things together like that. use a razor blade and carfully remove what is left of that tmu pad on yur heatsink, do NOT scratch or gouge the heatsink. then use rubbing alcohol to get any last little bits left cleaned of and to leave a cleen surface for the compound...good luck.

If the thick pad wont come off with rubbing alchohol, get some xylene based paint thinner :D
that stuff dissolves plastic (literally) The brand i use is "goof off"

Heres a good tutorial for your first thermal pasting (its for artic silver, but its all the same)

You mean in my sig? or just here?

My 3Dmark2001SE scores are just terrible.. only ~5700 3Dmarks :( .. but I do get around 17K (I think that's the score, I've forggoten already..) for Aquamark3 without much tweaking to the GPU...

*EDIT* That score was before I oc'ed my CPU.. havn't tested the OC'ed system coz I oc'ed when my HDD is already damaged...

Are you sure? I only get something like that on a P3 800MHz system.. it should have performed better but my CPU is being bottlenecked... :sob:
