A key goal for the OLPC project is the ability of the laptop to have electricity even in places where electricity isn't exactly convenient. However, to make enough power for the laptop to run for 10 minutes, a 1 minute supply of 20 Watt power is required. The previous hand crank tired out the user, was VERY noisy, and supplied a maximum of 5 Watts. The new generator, produced by Squid Labs, runs like a lawnmower engine starter. Pulling the generator string spins the generator, producing electricity. While simple enough, a string-based generator allows the user to use more muscle groups then the ones in their hands. It also is very quiet, and can produce more power with alot less effort. 20 Watts of power is very easy to do with the new generator, and by using foot power, 10 Watts of sustained power is definitely possible. Another key advantage of the string powered generator is the durability. If the string breaks, then it can be replaced with a shoelace. The generators are planned to be field tested in October, and the OLPC is scheduled to be launched in 2007 with a 500MHz processor, a 7.5" screen, 500MB of flash memory, and wireless broadband for creating instant wireless networks with nearby OLPC laptops.
