Only front speakers working on Vista?

Ive got my 7.1 speakers all plugged in (5.1 + monitor speakers), yet only the two front speakers are playing in media player.

In control panel, ive set it to 7.1 and when i test each speaker they all work, but in media player only the 2 front ones work.

Its gotta be some sort of setting ive missed

Anyone know?

Just a thought, but the monitor speakers may not work in conjunction with the others in the actual 5.1 system. Do all the speakers work in anything else?

Doesnt the sound have to be designed for a 5.1 system in order for it to work?
eg playing certain games and watching dvds?

I dont think your rear speakers are supposed to work in WMP

yeh the sub will work, thats included with your front speakers

eg 2.1 or 3.1
which means 2 speakers and a sub
or three speakers and sub

but 5.1 wont because you have two rear speakers which i guess have f**k all to do when playing audio files

Na thats the problem.

Only the two front speakers are working. Not even the sub/center and two sides are working (which is part of the initial 5.1) (monitor is rear which also isnt working)

But, as i said, in control panel, even the monitor speakers work when you 'test' them

(BTW - if i plug the sub jack into where the front is (on the mobo), the sub and center will work and the two fronts wont)

When you are playing a stereo source, you are going to get stereo output. The only way around this is to get a plugin that upmixes stereo sources to 5.1 sound. On my Sound Blaster Audigy 2, I have to use Creative's Audio Console and enable "Stereo Surround" mode to get sound coming out of all of my speakers. There are plugins available for Winamp and Windows Media Player that will upmix your sound, though.

Oh I neglected to read the part about Vista...do you have final release drivers?

Yeah...Vista installed its own drivers which worked fine (except in WMP), but i decided to install the latest drivers from my mobo off the ASUS site. Still, no luck.

I'm sorry to hear that; one of the main reasons I'm waiting a while to go to Vista, and I need to upgrade me comp :O

I doubt its Vista's fault...i mean, the speakers are working (in control panel and all), its just WMP
