ok guys i seriously need some help on this one. at school i took a programing class with having no previous programming knowledge. any ways the teacher told us to pick a open source program and make a presentation about it.

i have no idea about any programs besides Mozilla, and limewire.
i tried googleing but not many useful results.

can you help make a list of popular open source programs?:)

What about Subsonic

Subsonic is a free, web-based media streamer, providing ubiquitous access to your music. Use it to share your music with friends, or to listen to your own music while at work. You can stream to multiple players simultaneously, for instance to one player in your kitchen and another in your living room.

Subsonic is open-source software licensed under GPL.

The forum can be found HERE

The developer is called Sindre Mehus

He is a very approachable guy and I'm sure if you posted on his forums about your presentation he would give you as much information as you need.

Best of luck!

Well one of the best places to look is http://sourceforge.net/

"SourceForge is your location to download and develop free open source software."
"As of February, 2009, more than 230,000 software projects have been registered to use our services by more than 2 million registered users, making SourceForge.net the largest collection of open source tools and applications on the net."

Hopefully you will find something there :D

Maybe you could do it on an OpenSource Video Game? Could make it a little bit more interesting to present.

If i could give you some advice with regard to picking a piece of software:

1. Pick something that interests you - this will come across in the presentation and will help to keep your audience interested.
2. When you present, pretend (to yourself) that it is YOUR software and that you are trying to sell it to your audience....again this hopefully come across to your audience.
3. If you have an interest in the software you will almost certainly do more research and overall produce a better presentation.
4. Start with the key selling points of the software and then explain in more depth why each point is good for the prospective user and give a brief technical explanation of the challenges and processes.
5. Always good to have some light hearted humour in there (for example if you choose a music app...make sure you have some album art from a really dodgy band....barry manilow or similar should do nicely)

For example:

Subsonic: Listen to your music wherever you are. Share your collection with family and friends.

This will give any users complete freedom to access their music, share playlists etc from any internet connected device...be it PC, PS3, Iphone etc.
This is achieved by presenting your music library as a secure, easy to navigate web site. Also due to an inbuilt downsampling and transcoding engine....any file format is supported and the bit rate easily adjusted to suit your bandwidth needs (ie 64kbps, 128, 192....320kbps)(picture of granny listening to the beastie boys while doing the cleaning)

blah blah blah

Hope that helps :toast:

Twiki might be a good one.

You could even use it as a content management system, or a lecture/learning/knowledge platform, for your class. Even better, get ALL YOUR FRIENDS to post their homework within your wiki!

Follow IggSter's advice, whenever you need some open source material/program, just do a search on Source Forge.
