Microsoft says a half billion devices are now running Windows 10, its latest operating system.

That's up from 400 million disclosed last September, but far short of a goal of 1 billion by 2018.

Microsoft has already acknowledged it won't hit 1 billion in time. Getting halfway has taken nearly two years.

I've only, ONLY upgraded from 8.1 because of promised DX12 support. So far in the past 2 years there are barely enough interesting titles that support the API, I don't regret upgrading since it is more stable than any other Win OS. For those first few years, several games could not run as well as they did before, some didn't even launch, some programs had to update to support 10 but it was fast, especially when it's not freeware.

Anyone 'member the unofficial Win XP DX10 patch? That somehow backported the DX from Vista to work on Win XP? I wonder how that turned out. I don't think something like that ever happened again.

Vulkan is far better API anyway and supports OS'es up to 7. I wish it had more love and support. Linux could use some too.

Forced upgrade tactics caused me to run 7, not to mention it seems any major release of w10 builds breaks something...

The latest content update seem to be stable.

Win7 is the new XP. I hate using it.

You mean W8 is, everyone hates using that OS, it was enough to make people demand 7 be installed on new computers even like xp/vista fiasco.

I'd take 8 over 7. I still have my daily work computer on 8, I've been too lazy to upgrade to 10. And really 8 does everything I need and works well.

Why though, exactly? Sure, Win 7 support is now completely dropping, Windows update is broken and you have to tweak it just right to make it work right especially with new hardware. Is that the reason? These are the only reasons I can come up with right off the top of my head.

It's still fairly usable.

Two years with a lot of high pressure and free upgrades. Hopefully they aren't too proud of still only having a quarter of the OS installed basically. A lot less high pressure and that number might be reversed with Windows 7.

That said, I quite like my W10. I also have an 8.1 machine that does everything I want and is very solid.

Usable, yes, but it just feels old once you are used to the newer OSes.

Large file transfers, and doing multiple file transfers, is so much better in 8/10. Just the ability to pause one transfer so the others speed up is so nice. The much improved TaskManger is also something I miss when going back to 7. The much better multi-monitor support is also something I miss in Windows 7. Just the ability to have a taskbar on each monitor, as well as having the windows open appear only on the taskbar of the monitor it is on.

It's just annoying to me. It just feels ... sluggish somehow. It feels old.

Now with the extra points mentioned, it does feel dated, I mean it's been 8 years since release. Gaming on it was the best years I've had, Win 10 not so much for gaming.

Bloomberg did an interview with Microsoft's vice president Yusuf Mehdi, in that interview he announced that over 300 million people use Windows 10 on a daily basis.

It is an interesting fact considering last year Microsoft announced it had 400 million devices active with Windows 10. Though such numbers always are to be taken with a grain of salt, the daily usage however should be fairly accurate.

The original goal for Microsoft was to have one Billion devices fitted with the OS, but that target seems a bit unlikely.

Personally I'm sticking with Windows 7 on my main systems, I'm going to wait to see were this new interest in Privacy is going, not to mention design changes, though I have started using/playing with Win10 on my old X58 system, so far the 1 feature I really wish I could bring over to Windows 7 is the ability to easily set the default location for Windows/File Explorer.

I say the same with 7, for me it just works. Those who don't have the knowledge like we do would go back to 7 over 8 or use 10 at its 1 size fits all approach (Not good enough for me though lol)

MS forced updates that caused the issue, I don't have those issues because of certain updates on my rig now, but I don't use WUD other than to list updates to grab, I manually grab what I need and install using a script.

Deduct those forced to upgrade and the figure would probably be half.
The only way Microsoft could fake W10 as being the fastest uptake is by ramming it down user's throats. and installing by stealth.

I honestly don't plan to upgrade to W10 until W7 starts giving me issues. On W7, everything I do works perfectly, on W10, other than a pink punkbuster screenshot for Cod4 (which means no playing promod) I also don't have that much problems, it's just that I see no major benefit (for me) to install W10.

For me, counting different Windows desktop OS's separately is a swindle or has other goals (financial or what not, I don't care).

Fact is, you can run the same software on XP, 7, 8 or 10 (rarities apart): it's one product family or "ecosystem" as stupid redactors call it now.

I thought OSX would be huge by now, but seems the masses just use iOS phones (don't know if I write it well, only touched one Apple product in my life, an iMac, once, 15 years ago).
