Operation...New computer?

Hey guys long time no see.

So ive hit that peak where I want to upgrade my system yet again. Ive made like 3 threads over the course of this last year saying that but havent actually done so yet.

The problem is that ive been out of the loop for so damn long i have no idea what anything is anymore. All I know is that Intel is still the best choice to go.

So here is what im looking at:

Im looking at getting an i5 since it would more or less suit my needs. Im thinking dual core with hyper threading to essentially make it a quad core to save the cash. I dont really need an i7 with hyper threading cause there's no way in hell im going to utilize all 8 of those cores. Here's the CPU i was looking at.

Now, for the motherboard, I really dont have a shit eating clue on this. I do want to do some overclocking. I may want to try and get the most out of it as I can in the future but for now Im thinking just a mild overclock to squeeze out that little bit extra. I was looking at this motherboard but Im not so sure. And im pretty sure that CeraM!X thing is just a gimmick.

And finally, I chose this RAM.

As always, im open to suggestions. The budget is sorta of limited on this one. I really dont want to go all out on this. What im looking to do is sell my current CPU/motherboard/RAM and use that money to go towards the new system. One of my other problems are, I dont know the current price range for my current items. I heard JrRacingFan could help me out here.

If I could find a deal from members here that would be awesome. Im open to that. But in order for me to get my new system, I first have to sell my current cpu/board/RAM.

Hi!

1. Get an i5 750. 4 real cores (wait isn't that an AMD thing?) for about the same price. Games won't make as much use with HT as they would with a quad.

2. Interesting motherboard choice, though I'm sure it's fine and will do what you need it to do.

3. I like the RAM.

No its not an AMD thing. They are simliar in comparison but completely different. I wont bother going into it otherwise ill run the risk of you slapping me on the wrist again like you did the last time.

The 750 is more than what im looking to spend on a CPU. Unless I could find a helluva deal from a member.

From our PM. I still think you should go either up to the i5 750 or all the way(scratch this see my edit) down to an i3 5x0 chip. Not much of a performance difference from the 650 to a 530 in my personal use(overclocking and benches yes but day to day no). That's if you are buying brand new.

My take on it there really are only 4 proc's I would look at right now in the market:

i3 530 x4 630 x6 1055t and i7 920

i3= Casual gamer/HTPC
x4= Casual gamer/Casual Encoder
1055t= Enthusiast Gamer/Casual Encoder
i7= Enhusiast Gamer/Enthusiast Encoder

With that said, IMO, I don't really think you are going to notice an upgrade from your current specs unless you go to the x6 or the i7.

x6 would be ALOT cheaper on the wallet.

No no, I remember AMD using the "real cores" slogan, I know what it means.. however I found a way to make it into normal conversation.

Since the 750's go for around $190 retail, you should easily be able to find one for that dual core price.

Its like the good old P4HTs, weren't even close to similarly clocked HT-less Pentiums Ds

if you ease up the board you could up on the cpu .. like:

and for boards maybe:
GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3
or
ASUS P7P55D-E

Been doing alright for the most part.

Still debating if I want to go the dual core or quad core route. Not really sure yet. If I can find a really good deal on a used CPU then I could go with that.

The Asus board looks good. Seems to be a lot of ppl complaining about that MSI board though.

Id like to keep it under $500 and thats including selling or trading my current cpu/mobo/ram.

i'd say with a any i5 (excluded i5 750) or i3 you would certainly miss some performance from what you got now. so if you feel what you have now is overdoing it then a nice i5 could be a solution.
if you expect the same or more then i think you should be peeking in the i7 section.
i had a Q9450 and with all that cache it makes it quiet a nice chip but i moved on to a i7 860 and it is worthwhile.

some of the msi boards are actually pretty good. they are not quiet up to par with the gigabyte, asus, evga, etc but pretty close

you could easily get an i7 920 used combo at that budget! 160-175 cpu 120-190 mobo 100-135 RAM

I was under the impression that while you can put a clarkdale chip in a p55 (lynnfield) motherboard, and visa versa, it is not recommended. That does look like a nice motherboard, but I would put a i5 750 in it.

I'm not really high on the whole clarkdale series. I don't get paying for a CPU with a GPU in it that isn't going to be used if you get a discrete graphics card. I guess you wouldn't be looking at that motherboard if you weren't going to get a nice GPU too.

If you really want to go with the i5 650, you can get a much cheaper motherboard like this one.

You could also save money on the CPU too and get a i3 530. It's dual core (4 threads) and I've read that it overclocks real well.

Basically that's all there is between 5xx and 6xx. Higher clocked "better" IGP, higher multi, which allows higher bench clocks, and IMO a better binned IMC.

Yeah, Lynnfield though are native quad. 7xx based i5 don't have HTT whereas 8xx i7 brethren do. Much bigger difference with those chips EDIT: and 4MB more cache.
