Ok, my significant other has unexpectedly given me the go ahead to get something foolish and completely unnecessary - ie a QX9650. I found a place taking preorders, and as joke I told her about it and how much it would cost, just to get a reaction from her. Surprisingly, she didn't even flinch. She just said to wait until after Nov. 26 (when the Visa resets). Now, money is not a big issue for us, obviously, as we are fortunate to both have good paying jobs, mortgage will be gone next year etc., but aside from my initial system build, I don't spend more than a couple of hundred at a given time(rarely), so this is a big cost, actually and psychologically for me.

Now the catch is, if I get this, I would not be able to upgrade any of my components, as I planned, until probably mid next year. My MB is known to have a weak NB, so I figure max FSB would be in the area of 410-420 (without vmods, which I am not going to do), so I probably will not be able to utilize the full potential of the chip, if I got it.

Anyway, I figure I have three options:

1. Listen to the e-penis screaming "dont be an idiot, just get the damn thing" and forego my other upgrade plans for a while.

2. Forget about it and go with my original plan: Get the mere mortal Q9450 in Jan/Feb, then MOBO (P35/x38/x48 - depending on reviews with the Yorkfields), and then a DX10 card sometime in the summer.

3. Get the QX, use it for a few months, sell it (for a few $$$ loss) and continue with my upgrade plan as in #2.

Any opinions, suggestions. Thanks.

I personally would just go with #2. As someone who was once in the same exact situation as you, though it was myself treating myself, I went with the Extreme Edition P4 years ago haha and blew $900 on that piece of junk. Extreme high end parts lose their wow factor for me personally after a couple of weeks, then it settles in how much was spent on it and it feels like a waste to me. To each his own, I personally would go with the sensible #2 plan.

When the time is right sell and upgrade again. Mahahahaha

What you need to do is tell her you need a new motherboard to make that CPU work right!!!

Get the QX9650.

Hey Kreij, hows your board doing with a QX? Have you tried pushing it far? I notice you have almost the exact same setup (aside from the QX, that is).

I would actually wait for Phenom, see what it does. It may just end up beating Penryn accoring to recent numbers.

Links? From the recent news that they are having trouble getting to 2.6Ghz, I'm not too optimistic on AMD, but it would be nice.

I can push it to 3.107GHz without voltage changes and it's stable.
At 3.2GHZ it was a crap shoot as to whether it would boot or not.
If I kicked up the core voltage a bit I am sure it would be stable, but the CPU runs really hot under load. I am just running air, so I don't push it too hard as I don't want to cook the CPU :)

The mobo is rather finicky about OC'ing memory too much. The DH is only rated at PC2-6400, but I can run it without problem pretty close to the PC2-8500 that the RAM is rated.
Again, without any changes in voltage, at 8500 it gets flakey.

Yeah, I'm finding the same on mine. I can boot at PC2 8000 but not stable, and havent really tried significantly upping the NB/FSB voltage (into the red zone). Thats why running 800 3-3-3-10. Ive taken the e6600 to 3.6 at 1.5v, but finding it hard to get past there, and I know the Q's are different animals as far as heat goes. Just wondering what to expect.
