It's time to change, 5 years down the line with Sandy and I can't say I'm disappointed nor that I really need to upgrade because the old girl still serves me well. My situation however is slightly different. I'm about to take out a loan for a house and get married which leaves little to no space for PC upgrades in the future. Like me, you might argue there will be but I don't see this in the near future. Since Sandy served me 5 years (and will do more) I want to build something that can last me the next 5+ years at least. My requirements have also changed. Sandy was my gaming machine but after that I got into photography and now video which now makes me want more cores and threads!

Some other info, I'm not new to PCs, I've been building PCs for myself and others for over 10 years now, even though I was quite younger back then and actually know what I'm doing. The reason I'm asking for assistance is because I'm venturing into an area I've never been to before which is the high-end spectrum of things. So I'm going to list a few pointers we can work with.

  • Build is case only, no peripherals.
  • LGA2011-v3 centric, yes, looking at that sexy i7-6950X
  • No GPUs, using both my R9 290s
  • M2 SSD doesn't have to be NVMe, no HDDs required
  • 64GB of RAM preferred
  • ASRock boards are preferred since I have direct contact to my local agent and have used them extensively both for myself and for others in the last 9 years (see specs/sig :) )
  • Budget at €3000, can exceed it if I see fit but would be good to stay below.
  • For power supply I've had great results with my 550w Supernova G2 so looking into a 1000W Supernova P2 750w/850w Gold PSU as informed in the first few posts.
  • Usage will be as described above, photos and video (Adobe Suite, Capture One) and probably since there will be the cores and threads, a massive amount of re-encoding. I currently 2 PC stream to Twitch so I think I might be moving to a 1 PC setup using this machine so there will be some gaming especially considering the crossfire setup.
  • Has to be custom loop cooled, will take suggestions but I do love EK, have had my setup for all of these 5 years without any hiccups.
  • [EDIT] The current Sandy machine will stay as is except the GPUs being replaced, already have a pair of 7850s and 6870s I can use so nothing other than one of the SSDs and the 290s will be used on the new bui.d
  • Location is Malta so due to import taxes prices have to be within the EU if I have to import them.

Take it away from here boys & girls. Let me know if there's something I'm not thinking through or could improve and thank you for your kind attention.

IS the 6950X supposed to replace the 5960X, ie will it launch at the same price or will the 10 core cost even more? I would probably go for the 6950X if I was in your place. Depending on how much it'll cost, obviously. You won't run out of power any time soon, at least not if it overclocks at least as well as the 5960X.

Rumored $1500, I did budget it in my preliminary decision at €1500 which is roughly $1250 but knowing how they price things I'd rather be safe. So yes, it will replace the 5960X as the Extreme CPU but probably higher in price. If it's lower then it makes it easier but for the sake of it I'll assume half my budget is the CPU. The point of the price not being a bother to me at this stage is that I expect to last and keep eating whatever I throw at it until it gets replaced by whatever extreme CPU is available during that time.

1000w PSU is not necessary Sir, a 80+bronze 700W will easily provide enough power for keeping your system running, i will prefer to invest money on an UPS, APC units are great, also Seasonic PSU's are another option to consider,

since you are moving from a great Sandy proceesor to an Haswell / Broadwell -E platform you may consider:
X99 Board,
DDR4 memory Kit
New brackets for your current cooler,

so my recomendation:
X99Board: Gigabyte UD7 X99 Board
Memory: Kingston hyperx fury kits
Processor: its pretty wise to wait a little for the new generation arrival, also may get some hot deal with the older Haswel-E line up lad,

Regards,

I doubt a 700w bronze could keep up. My NZXT Hale82 850W bronze with the GPUs and OCed Sandy pulls 750w at the wall with its fan spinning at max.

About the cooler, I think I should add that to the OP, I want to keep the Sandy machine as an operational machine for other tasks, I have a pair of 7850s I could put it in and still play some games somewhere else in the house. I do intend to keep the current loop on Sandy and move to a bigger setup on X99, so probably 360 or 480 rad depending on case.

826w at the wall would be the max continuous a 700w 80+ bronze can pull and still be meeting its rating. Your NZXT is known for not meeting its rating so I would obviously suggest upgrading that, but he is correct in saying a 1000w unit is not required. A good 850w gold would be more than sufficient.

Me personally wait for the new batch of x99 with usb 3.1 and multiple m.2 slots to hit the market planning a board now is a poor idea with new ones just around the corner.

So with an 850w I'm calculating 1kw at the wall, correct? Should make it enough for an OCed 140w cpu along with my GPUs I guess.

I do also believe ASRock's X99X/3.1 would be the refreshes with USB 3.1 and multiple m.2. Seen them around, would of course make sense to get the latest, prices weren't so different from the older ones IIRC.

It's why I moved to EVGA on my 24/7 file server.

Just a curiosity, I went gold for 24/7 on my file server since it uses such low power it was the best bet between a good PSU and efficiency. Where do Platinum and Titanium ratings break even roughly in savings? If at all since it's only a few %?

efficiency its measure on loads... your PSU may have to be at heavy load to be efficient, that means that if you purchase the 1Kw PSU wont see that much efficiency since you will never will push the psu near its limits ...
get a seasonic psu, 750W 80+Gold and stop thinking about it... it will cover your ass forever... also think about a UPS too.... its a great tool lad...

I'll probably get a UPS before the arrival of this machine to put my file server on it as well. Scared a bit more about my data than components especially since electricity in my country isn't exactly stable, especially during Summer.

Next part I don't fully understand is RAM. If Broadwell-E supports up to 2,400Mhz and the board OCs to more I should be basing my numbers off of the motherboard, right? Or am I overlooking something since the controller is on the CPU itself?

The big difference in Titanium over anything else is the addition of the 90% efficiency at 10% load requirement. This is good for people that may leave their PC on as opposed to shutting it off. That said, you will be hard pressed to make that $ difference up with the premium they fetch over Plat/Gold... you can do the math and see. ;)

As far as the ram, I expect broadwell-e to be similar to Haswell-e in what it can support, if not higher. That said, I would run DDR4 3K CL14/15 sticks. Also, you are putting out money for 64GB, yet, only have 16GB currently. That makes little sense to me as clearly you are not eclipsing 16GB so why get 4x the ram? If you feel you want more and would like to 'futureproof' go 4x8GB. If you need 64, then go snag another kit down the road. DDR4 was 'just' released so it will be there in a couple years if needed.

As far as PSU sizing for your PC, if you are not overclocking anything, a quality 750W would be plenty (I like the EVGA Supernova G2 750W - best Tier 1 'bang for your buck' PSU out really). If you are planning on overclocking those old heaters and the new CPU, I would be looking at 900-1000W. I saw 850W at the wall with my r9 295x2 overclocked and my 5820K overclocked.

This machine will be turned off, I'm foreseeing an average span of around 6-8 hours daily since I moved to multiple systems just to keep the power and heat down (it's ridiculously hot in Malta) so Gold would suffice. I do plan on overclocking, straight away in fact. It's something I've done with almost all my CPUs. I love those first few days of finding the perfect stability and higher clocks.

To mention the ram factor, I do manage to max out my 16GB when rendering some "simple" stuff in After Effects. Once to the point of BSODing with an out of memory message. But I could go 4x8GB for now and it would more than likely be enough and get another 4 sticks a year or two later when the prices plummet.
