Hey all,
I'm trying to get my Opty 170 to 2.6 ghz. I feel that that is magical for some reason. Anyway, I can get it to 2.4 stable at 1.325 vcore. But a 1.375 vcore seems to get a 2.5 ghz stable but then It'll hard lock when I'm testing it towards the end. Using speedfan to check my temps I get up to 58C on load at 2.5 before the lockup, and when I'm at 2.4 I get to 53 or so. Idle temps hover around 34-36C.
Current cooling is 1 120 mm intake fan, 1 70 mm side intake, 2 80mm exaust. I have an Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro on it, with some relatively freshly applied AS5 (cleaned everything off before hand). The AS5 hasnt had it's "burn in" time completed yet but I dont think it'll drop my temps by 5C or more. Any suggestions? HTT and ram values are taken care of properly and all.

I get to 65 degrees C in coretemp 0.96 on core 1 in Orthos for over an hour but I haven't had a lock up.
Could be the motherboard.

Ok, best way for you to see if your temps are safe is looking at the "tjunction" temp in coretemp. Generally, you want to stay 15-20c below tjunction temps at full load.

With a stock cooler on that opty it will get a bit warmer than wanted when OC'ing. I would suggest some better cooling B4 I clocked too much farther.

AF64PRO is cheap and performs really well for the money. Just so you realize as well, most opty 170's will hit 2.6-2.8GHz on stock voltage, so you may just not have a good OC'er!

Also Opty's require good ram to Oc well....try running memtest86+ to rule out the possibilitie of the ram hindering the OC!

Try these things:
Increase your cpu voltage to 1.45. Increase mem voltage a little. Re-mount your heatsink to be sure it is getting proper contact. Lower ram divider from 200mhz to 166/133/100. Lower HTT speed by 50%. Run SuperPI to be sure cpu & ram are stable. Compare temp readings from more than one program to be sure they are accurate. Leave side panel off to see if temps improve. Case airflow can be a major factor while overclocking.

PS: "Burn-in" time usually only yields a 1-2 degree improvement.
If voltage is the problem, your motherboard can be modified to give up to 1.55 core voltage.
Some 3rd party bios's can improve overclock on that board significantly.

2.5 is probablly as high as your motherboard will let you take it.

How do I see that? I got temp 1, 2 and 3. then CPU and HDD.

MrW-I already remounted the heatsink and all that jazz. I might try another bios, I have heard of the OCworkbench bios and apparently the 1.5 version of the offical works well too. But i wanna get my cooling under control first.

Thanks all, any other suggestions? Should the side fan also be an exaust fan?

Bios versions below 1.70 have a front-side-bus clock limit. Be sure to update it if it's below 1.70.

I have heard of the OCworkbench bios and apparently the 1.5 version of the offical works well too.

OCWBeta6 bios and above are unaffected by the clock limit.

Thanks all, any other suggestions?

Take the side panel off, if the temp lowers significantly you need higher case airflow.

I have bad case ventilation.
I took off my side panel and temps dropped by 4 degrees.
