I am putting apart my computer (cleaning, painting ect.) and I want to know if I can put all computer components on a towel and run it so they won't cause any problems?

Id stay away from fabrics. Put it on a piece of cardboard or wood.

+2, fabric can catch the ends of solder leads and also create static electricity issues.

Preferrably an Anti-Static mat would be the best place but cardboard is relatively similar.

I use a cardboard box, but not one with a shiny surface. Just standard cardboard.
As mlee49 said, an anti-static mat would be fine, but don't use an anti-static bag. Anti-static bags are also known as "metal out" bags, meaning they only provide protection inside the bag, not out. So there you go - never test your components on an anti-static bag ;) (yes I know many people have done this and everything's been fine; as I have; but I'm pointing it out anyway)

Wood is also fine for short term use, but I wouldn't use it for any longer than a couple of hours, and especially not on a crunching rig or similar. Something about the moisture in the wood? Can't remember.

Thanks. I think I will use a piece of cardboard, because it will only be out of the box for about a day maybe 2 and I won't use it much in the mean time.
Realy thanks to everyone :respect:
