I need help please, i can't seem to over clock this 6400 black edition for crap. I am a noob when it comes to over clocking. I know the vocabulary and understand how to make the adjustments but have been unsuccessful in getting my FSb to do any damn thing and need some help. Maybe i am just to impatient, for some reason it seems if i mess with ram times my cpu will boot at all and i have to pull the battery and clear the cmos and that battery pull sucks...... big fingers and lots if sata plugs.

Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 Bios F8
BFG 8800GTX
850 Watt Thermatake PS

Zalmann CPU Cooler 9700
RAM...which to use....i can only get 4-4-4-12 to run on these nothing better yet...help!!!
2 gigs G.Skill 6400 4-4-3-5
2 gigs Geil 6400 4-4-4-12
2 gigs Geil Ultra 6400 3-3-3-8

Ram voltage is 0.4 high running the Geil Ultra @ 4-4-4-12. I have Everest Ultimate, 3dMark and a memory test boot disk to test stuff what else should i download, running XP Pro 64 Bit.

That CPU does not like to overclock at all. That could be the reason you can't get it to, but try raising your north bridge and CPU voltage. Just raise the CPU/ NB volts until you are stable.

Yeah the 6400 is running just about as fast as most Windsors like to run. Some people get lucky and can work with it a bit, but for a 90nm processor that things running pretty hairy right out the factory doors.

Read threw this thread http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=49420. Many good tips and configs for OCing the 6400+. Not a great overclocker but u can get a lil more from it. Your going to need to loosen your ram timings a bit and use only matching sets of ram.

shouldn't geil ultra be able to run at the rated config of 3-3-3-8.......how would i go about getting it to do so?

Am i correct in thinking that if my cpu is retty much maxed I should tighten the ram times to get more performance.

Stock is 3.2 you should be able to hit between 3.5-3.6 and oc your ram pretty well in the process if you drop the multiplier...that is why I said loosen the timings. If you want to just tighten em by all means go ahead but I dont see you getting much more out of the cpu if you do. As for the giel ram timings im lazy and dont feel like looking it up. good luck

Stick with the Geil Ultra.

You need to determine what your boards uninhibited FSB is. To do this you need to underclock the RAM and the CPU. Use a low multi on the CPU, like a 5x or something, so you know its not the cpu that is causing problems, and also choose a different RAM divider, so that the ram is underclocked as well. Oh yeah and drop your HTT to 3x.

Start incrementing the FSB up 5mhz at a time, apply voltage to FSB when unstable. You should be able to hit 300Mhz FSB doing this, or even more.

ok will do tonight when i get home...little help for me. CPU multipl i understand, FSB i know and understand. Currently I am @ 228 x 15 with ram @ 5-5-5-15, 2T, boots and runs fine but will not run 3dmark06 or SupCom FA test without BSOD. What are the HTT & Ram Divider?

Also what test should i perform to find if it is stable, 3dMark06? Supcom FA Per test? Everest Ultimate? Also my ram says 2.1-2.4v, I am at 2.25 now should i bump it to 2.4 1st thing?

ok after some thought is the divider that setting in the bios under the same area as the ram that is set to auto @ DDR800? I know I can adjust that to man, is that the divider?

So if my math is correct i could run my fsb @ 288, cpu multi @ 12, divider @ 166 and get 230 on the memory and 3456 on the proc?

I use the in BIOS utility for overclocking D.O.T. It stands for Dynamic Overclocking Technology. Its good but not good enough now I want to learn the basics of overclocking CPU especially for my AMD X2.

It should be able to go higher umm this is what I have had and I have the same cooler as you jerybak. I run 24/7 216X16 or 264X13 I have used 12 multi but I think it hates 12 lol. Should be able to get 214X16 with 1.45V the other settings I have used 1.47V the only time I had to use 1.50V was when I went near or too 3.5MHz.

If you are going to keep the multi at 16 then leave the @DDR800 I would try
CPU volts 1.45V
16X214=3.424MHz
HT would leave @5 so would be 1070MHz
Memory would be 428Mhz or 856MHz
my timings are 4-4-4-10 24.

or try
CPU volts 1.45-1.47V
NB 1.40V
HT volts 1.30-1.40V
13X264=3.432MHz
HT 4 = 1056MHz
Memory @667 = 429MHz so 858Mhz

Looking at my volts it seems my motherboard is volting a bit more than I set. I am not sure if your motherboard overvolts or not. So maybe 1.50V for CPU you will have to load up Hardware monitor and see. I would try the first one should make it easy.

Ok so you have established the fact that your FSB will do 300Mhz. Now if you adjust your RAM Ratio so its running 1:3 that will be 900Mhz. Keep the CPU multi lower, around 5x. Now get the RAM stable with the new FSB. You will need to increase the ram voltage to around 2.0 - 2.1 volts. Once you get into windows with that and its stable, you can then start increasing your CPU multiplier. Since that chip is supposed to run at 3.2Ghz, you can just up the multiplier to 10x @ 300Fsb with 1:4 ratio on the RAM. IF thats stable try 11x for 3.3GHz. You many need to add voltage to the CPU, not much only 100Mhz over stock. If your board supports .5 multis, step up to 11.5 which would be 3.45Ghz. Not many people can get these beyond this. I have seen some and very few 3.5 - 3.6.

Slow steps, slow Voltage increases, and watch your temps.
