Overclocking advice (voltages and speed)

I've got an Athlon x3 425 at 2.7ghz
how far do you think i can overclock safely?
my motherboard overvolts only 150mv
can i reach 3.5ghz for example?
stock cooling atm so might stop at about 3.2ghz

Only indeed, 350 will take your voltage up to 1.55 if your stock volts are 1.2

that's a massive amount of voltage!

With decent cooling you could probably do 4 ghz.

You could do 3.2 on stock volts I imagine.

it only goes up 150mv

you should get 3.4-3.6ghz off of stock voltage easy...just start clocking and testing till it becomes unstable... That is how you find your limits

...Trial and error is a big part of overclocking

I was told just as long as you keep all voltages under 1.55(excluding ram) and temps under 60C(excluding video card) you will be fine for 24.7 usage.

Agree with you pos, but 3.4Ghz is the norm for a 425. I heard anything past 3.7ghz on an Athlon II things go wonky.

thats the reason i said 3.4-3.6ghz

but i don't think that the 3.7ghz rule applies to the AII X2's well atleast not the one that i had or a few others i have seen. 4ghz was fairly easy on my AII X2 even under a 64bit OS and 3.9ghz was stable 24/7...
i need another AMD system to play around with. I'm tired of the i7 3.9ghz 24/7 on it was easy once i got it underwater

I got core errors on core 1 and 2 on OCCT at 3.0ghz at stock volts

Just letting you know by my personal experience. I can crunch all night and day but as soon as I choose OCCT/Small data and run it I get random restarts.

I know every proc is different.

Run through a single linX run at maximum ram available. If you can get through that without BSOD/freeze then you should be ok for 24.7.

I would personally advise trying to get it a little more stable than this (ie, it should be able to run linpack tests like linX on maximum for a decent number of runs and get no errors...)
Otherwise you're not really stable.

Do what I do, prime 95 on max heat + using the computer as normal at the same time for four hours.

( using msn, firefox, watching videos etc all while prime does its stuff)

Best stability test in my opinion

just ran linpack max stress level 5 times on autonumber of threads
42* max temp

MOAR OVERCLOCK

Keep it under 55c for best results : ]

bare in mind your ambients will be up 10c soon so that will take you to 65 in the summer!

Don't really want hotter then that : ]

Also, check with more than one temperature monitoring program. I was getting weird readings out of speedfan (still do, about 18 degrees lower than realtemp/coretemp/hwmonitor show).

Doesn't speed fan only read the cpu temp and not core temps though?

Nope, was showing Core 0-Core 3, all at 15 degrees idle and 54 degrees load, whereas in actual fact they were at 35-37 degrees idle and 75-78 load.

What would you claim as "really stable"? I claim rock solid stable as 1hr of OCCT small data set and stable as 1 linx maximum run. As you can see, "stable" becomes more personal preference than anything. Oh and a little tip ...

Hmm, I'll run 1hr of OCCT small data and TEN linx max runs

and i'll watch it using real temp
i'm go for 3.6ghz stock volts... when that fails i'll bump the voltage up
