hey guys!
my friend came up with the idea to try to overclock his old computer with dry ice! i know that if i add 90% alcohol to dry ice, it turns into something very similar to liquid nitrogen. now here is my question, where would i find the necessary items to make this happen? and how would i go along setting this up. i've seen a few videos about extreme overclocking with liquid nitrogen, so all i really need is list of parts i would need to use. thanks in advance!

you have a pot?

you'll need to insulate very well too.

kneeded rubber erasure is best. use some good paper towels as well.

insulate 2-3 inches around the cpu

make sure to insulate the pot too.

keep the pot 90% full and be sure to watch it to keep it from getting low.

DICE doesnt evap as fast as LN2 but it still evaps pretty quick so be sure to watch closely to keep from damaging the cpu.

if condensation starts to accumulate on anything not protected shut the machine down and unplug it asap.

you can prevent that from happening by using a spare fan to keep air flowing around the cpu area. you can also use a few extra paper towels to keep the moisture away from things like the video card and ram

Tell me more about the dry ice + alcohol thing. Or a link or something. That sounds pretty cool. (pun )

well if you use water, you get the "fogging effect" you see in movies and tv shows, with other non-H2O liquids you don't get that "fog" just very, very cold liquid.
RE: the first post, adding 90% alcohol to dry ice doesn't make it anything like LN2. LN2 and CO2 are two completely different compounds, i suspect what you mean to say is that instead of leaving it as ice chips or blocks, you get a hard slush with which to work with.

Sorry for my ignorance, but why acetone vs alcohol and under what conditions would something crack? This stuff sounds really interesting...

temps can change too quickly and cause the pot to crack or even the cpu core.

alcohol really doesnt do much more than water when mixed with DICE.

acetone + DICE is like salt + ice. it helps bring down the temp further than it normally would be and if gives the DICE a liquid to be suspended in while "melting"

acetone can be bought at home depot, lowes or any hardware store. its located in the painting section by the lacquer thinner, paint thinner and other cleaners/reducers.

also, volitile gasses+ any sparks = flashboombang, ensure that if you do use a flamable liquid with the CO2/dry ice, do so in a well vented area, besides being flamable, the vapor can cause you to pass out and maybe die.

I dissagree fitseries, you only want to add very little acetone otherwise all your dice will cool it the top of the pot its self the less acetone you use the better because more goes to the cpu than anywhere else. I use DICE a lot and have been for a while, no ofense m8
