I had that card. I does run very hot. You definately need to drop your overclock or add better cooling. At the very least, you need to add some AS5 to the chip. If you don't do one of these things, your card WILL die.

he has a good card, but the stock coolers can be appaling. 59C is hot, but not going to kill the card - however if it gets any hotter (hot day, etc) then it will die, and possibly do a lot of damage. 70C+ temps are definately a fire hazard if you arent careful (my GTX hit 90C in summer here, and all the stickers melted off the card - imagine if a power wire from the PSU was touching that area...)

SK-1 - here in aus, i've had my room temp at 40C before, with the air con broken. dont be so surprised ;)

AL so a very important thing even i forgot to ask - FarEast are these LOAD or IDLE temperatures? Could you please tell us what both of these are - if its 70C load, its bearable (if not nice) but if its greater than say 50C at idle, thats a serious issue.

He said that with 100% fan speed, it goes down to 59*c on idle
I'd hate to think of his load temps, as before putting it to 100% fan speed, he said it was at 95*c. Didn't mention if it was load or not though... I hope it was, and with low fan speed...
Otherwise, like you said, it's a huge fire hazard

88*c is hot, definately, and nearing the temperatures where GPU death is almost a certainty, but, my 6600 reached 90*c when overclocked and under load... it seemed to run quite a bit warmer when the Nvidia driver was fooled into thinking it was a Quadro too, which I used for about a month, and I believe it would reach ~95*c. I believe it reached about 103*c on occasion in the summer, but only once or twice.
Ended up selling it to help buy my new card, the guy that bought it never complained, so it's probably still functional.
Although I don't recommend keeping it at high temps like that for too long, it's just not healthy, unless you really don't care, in which case, it's fine.

EDIT: Also, that fan near the PC isn't healthy either... they can produce magnetic fields when spinning, and mess with CRT monitors, and anything using magnets (so, of course, HDD and FDD). I don't know if it's enough to kill a HDD, but if I were you, I'd rather not find out.
Yeah, I know, PC fans make mag. fields too, but since they're smaller, it's probably not enough to mess with monitors, and magnetic media.

95c won't kill a graphics card, the thermal failure point for current gpus is in the 110+c range.

Ehh... my X800 *apparently* runs at 54C idle, and the thermal paste is definitely on ok (admittedly the cooler doesn't make such close contact as I would like) but I'm suspicious that it may be reporting the wrong temperature considering that the card is underclocked when not in 3D applications and my CPU is only at 38C.

It edges into the 90s when I have it overclocked and under load, and I don't have any problems.

Jimmy - different cores. The x1650 pro cant take as much heat as an X800 can.

True, but it's the same as with CPUs. They have a maximum safe range of temperatures, but how close are you willing to go to that temperature before you say the temperature is too high? And how long are you willing to keep it at that temperature?
I think my CPU is too hot right now (idling at 44*c, I've tried reseating, new TP, etc. but temp. is probably so high because of a lack of airflow in my case, as it used to be at about 36*c in my old case)

Jimmy 2004 said:

Well, as long as it doesn't artifact then the card is probably fine, at least up to a certain point. Same case here, and my old card didn't artifact till it reached over 100*c, at which it remianed for a few minutes before I panicked and closed the game I was playing.

That is not true. My card artifacts at 52c if I have it oc'd too high. It may be within the threshold of acceptable temps, the card is still taking a beating. Downclock, and read an article on air-cooling your system.

That one doesn't seem to be anything to do with temperatures (as 52*c is not high at all) but rather the GPU itself, and possibly the voltages being too low.
Of course, 'tis true being near the limit doesn't mean you're safe, just means you're within range.

I know this doesn't help the topic, but what's the safe temp for a 7900 GT?

No GPU is safe over 90c. Yes they can go over that and be fine, but it is not good for the chip. between 70-90 C load temps are acceptable.

Now my gpu temp. is max at 83'C after downclocked to 635 core and 824 memory..This is the best setting i guess..No artifact at all after 1 hour of artifact scanning..:) :) Thanks guys..
