P4 3GHz Bottlenecking my X800 GTO AGP?

I was just wondering if my P4 3GHz, socket 478, would be bottlenecking my X800 GTO AGP. In other words, would I see a FPS increase in games if I overclock my P4 like 200-300 mhz?
BTW I haven't flashed my X800 GTO, yet. Thanks in advance.

not at the resolution most people play games at.. at a very low resolutiom (higher than normal fps) u might but only a very small one and then u wouldnt notice it unless u ran fraps or something..

Ok thanks. Its too hot in my room already, overclocking an Intel would lead to even more heat.

I had a P4 3.2 Prescott skt 478 and I used a GigaByte mobo to overclock it which worked very well

get a centerwood socket 478 board if you really want to OC it, but I recomend just buying a new setup. I upgraded my socket 478 setup about a year back. Sure I get 3.5 Ghz, but your better off getting a new setup as to updated something as old as socket 478.

Also I've found with northwoods overclocking is largely dependent on the CPU. My 2.66 GHz core OCed past 3.4 easily. While my 2.53 Ghz Core maxes out at about 3.0 GHz

CPU only effects max fps. It has little or nothing to do with minimum fps.

Example, lets say you magically overclocked your p4 to 5 ghz.

Game would be Farcry:

P4 at 3ghz - max fps=90 minimum= 25 average=50
P4 at 5ghz - max fps=140 mimimum=25 average= 70

See what I mean? It makes benchmarks look better but has almost nothing to do with actual gameplay.

Where you do need a very fast cpu is with 7900/x1900 sli.

Example= 3ghz p4
1024x768=60 fps
1280x=60fps
1600x=60fps
2048x=58fps

THAT^ is a cpu bottleneck right there, until you get to 2048 resolution in this imaginary example I made up.

Thank you soo much for your input, I was referred to the ABit already so I was considering it, but damn now you got me thinking about completely udgrading the motherboard and the CPU, I was gonna try to get everything out of my CPU by overcloking it, then maybe in a year when my ATI X800(AGP) is reeeeally outdated, do a complete upgrade.



Oh decisions decisions...what do you suggest?

Well first off if you did decide to go with new mobo/CPU what would be your budget? I have built 3 Pentium 805 D systems in the past few weeks, and I have to say that I'm rather impressed with their overclocking for a budget Dual core CPU. If you have a little more money you want to put in I'd go with an Opteron setup . . . or even better wait another month or so for a Conroe (Which is what I'm doing) I reccomend just passing up on getting a new mobo and putting that 100 toward a next gen vid card or your next motherboard. Your will get a decent performance boost, but nothing incredible with the new mobo.

IF I was on a budget and I needed a system at this moment heres what I'd get.

Pentium 805 D
ECS 945 mobo (Yes I know everyone hates ECS but this is an amazing board)
and a x1600 Pro
1GB DDR2 Memory

Totals less then $$380 USD
only 4 x more then the price of a new mobo. I think a complete upgrade would be best.
