Hey guys just got a new rig put together, evreything seems to work fine until just after I post:

p5qpro
e8400
2x 2gb kingston hyx 8500
640g wd hdd
gamexstream 700w
hd4850
auzen prelude

so I set up my bios to boot from DVD drive, (not the ATAPI setting, but specific IDE dvd drive option), and pop in my windows vista boot disk. I get a please insert boot media request, and then told to press any key. I do, but nothing happens. Its not the standard "Press any key to boot from cd-rom drive" option. The dvd drive does appear to be trying to access the data (the light blinks) but then stops.

I've tried booting with other boot media (win xp)

my DVD drive is IDE-based, so I think my bios is reading it as a hard drive instead..

I've tried everything I can think of..my only thought is that I need a Sata dvd drive instead...which wont be here for another 5 days from newegg.

any thoughts?

I think it could be a IDE DVD drive issue. I read something similar about P35 boards (IP35 Pro in particular) having this problem. One can use IDE HDD but not IDE CD/DVD. Assuming all your BIOS settings are correct, which im sure they are, you probably tried all of them, then you have to wait for SATA DVD drive.

that could be it also, some boards come with 2 controllers, southbridge and whatever else. Make sure the one you are using to install is enabled.

Sounds really similar to an issue I had on an ASUS A8N32 Deluxe. Turned out after an RMA or two, that my HDD was in fact at fault. Not that it was bad, as i wrote windows on it with my DFI.

But went thro hell to figure it all out. I say start there!

asus p45's dont have a native SB ide controller. hence the marvel chip. ;)

earlier I tried putting in my winxp hard drive and it booted up- but did not boot from disk even though I had it set to #1 boot priority. i'll try taking out the audio card just for giggles

did you have the ide boot rom enabled?

yes both of the marvell options are enabled. I've tried booting with one off, one on as well but still nothing.

it detects my IDE drive though... and I've been reading more forums people having the same problems. they say after rma'ing their board they still get the same problems. really disappointed I dont plan on RMAing it after I've spent all of these hours trying to get it working. its gotta be something stupid and simple, right? arg

if you have another board you can hook everything up and install the os then hook everything to the p5q board. it will boot up and work fine. you'll have to figure out a way to get at least the chipset drivers and ethernet drivers on the machine without the cd though. then you'll be set to DL the rest of your stuff off the net.

you could just get a sata dvd drive. they are only like $29 now.

ah good idea Fits. that's what I'll have to do

the IDE hard drive does in fact work. so its not a bad IDE port

and edit: yeah I ordered a sata dvdr from newegg a couple of days ago. just waiting for it

agreed, they are so difficult to hide. With the P35/45 IDE problems it seems like one is being pushed to go all SATA. I made the transition over a year ago and couldnt be happier. Good luck Ninkobwi.
