Paint Removal Advice

Hi all,

I've been looking around on Google for ways to remove paint from my PC case.
I've got an Antec 1200 and I want to make it red - shockingly ....
Sanding is the ovbious option, however, it's going to be very difficult on many of the bits.

Is there something I can soak it in to get the paint off? Something like White Spirit? Will get remove the paint?

I was hoping I could get rid of the paint using something like White Spirit and then wash it all off, ready for painting. Would this work on the paint used on the Antec 1200?

Primer should adhere to the existing paint. Use primer, lightly sand and paint with the new color.

I would say use a 400-600 grit sand paper and rough up the current paint, wipe or better yet blow(air compressor) the paint dust off, and put a couple coats of primer on it..thin coats of primer so it doesn't run.

Paint Remover.
It's a liquid which makes the paint swell and bubble up and then you can gently scrape it off.

You should be able to find this in the UK -- HBBody Paint Remover

Check first if it will work on plastics though.

Sorry, I should have said - I'll only be doing the metal. I fancy having the metal red and leave the plastics black.

I've got some 600 and 800 grit sand paper. So, you reckon I don't actually need to get rid of the origional paint? Just rough it up a bit and put primer on to the existing paint? Will that hold enough?

Yes that will make the new paint 'hold'.

What's the original colour of your case?
If it's black.... you might really need the paint remover because in most cases it is hard to prevent black from 'bleeding through' into the new red paint. Do a little test to check... It all depends on the opacity of the type of red paint you purchase really, but red's a hard colour to use to cover up.

It shouldn't bleed if you put on 3-4 light coats of a dark primer.

Yeah, my Antec 1200 is black.
Last questions .... If I add to the existing paint, is it more likely to flake or chip? I'm not planning on bashing the case about mind you .... just wondering.
Primer I've got is a grey colour. Perhaps I should use about 4 coats to prevent the black from bleeding through?

Just to make absolutly clear .... I rough the existing paint up with the 600 grit. Then I put on the primer, 2-3 coats, then I lightly sand, then add the red paint, 2-3 coats I guess, can't remember what that can said.

Best thing to remove paint from..anything : Brake Fluid. Just put it on where you cant reach with sandpaper and let it be there over night. Then just "peel" the paint off.

After drying then I would lightly sand with some 800-1000 grit, wipe off the paint dust(DO NOT USE YOUR HANDS cause the oils on your hands will defeat the purpose), and put on 3-5 light coats of paint.

acetone ftw... just soak it overnight in a closed container in a well ventilated area.

Should I put some Clear Lacquer on after painting it?

I've already got some, but I don't know what the good and bad points are, or if it's worth it?

If the temps aren't too cold when you spray your color "hi-gloss" type paint, you can probly get it to lay down flat enough to not need clear coat.

Another thing about painting red over dark, most red paints are slightly see through/ not fully opaque; it helps to brighten "get the reds to POP" by using a light coat of white between your primer and red.

Yeah, I did a little painting on an old case first. I did some on to the bare grey metal case, and some on to the black outside. The red on the black barely showed up at all, but the red on the grey was perfect. Deffinately need a light colour under it, but luckily, the primer I'm using is just about the right colour
