Password Protect a folder (external link)

RAN across this on Tom's Hardware. Been looking for something like this for a while.

My question: How to take this a step farther? The article suggests saving the lock BAT in the same location as the folder, or am I reading this wrong?

Yep it appears you create/save the BAT file within the directory you want to lock. Though discussions of how to use it make it sound like you must point the BAT to it externally in order to maintain the lock. THen since this BAT has your password in plaintext, that begs the question if it is really secure? In some situations it may be...to anyone that is able to sniff around they may find it.

The revised script in the third to last post might make more sense. But I have my concerns with any of them and prefer encryption myself, similar to what's discussed in the last post below:

It also depends on the use-case and application desires of locking/passwording a directory. If you have a multi-user system and are admin, you can set NTFS permissions to restrict other users that are not admin (or shouldn't be), you could even restrict them at least initially until they realize they can audit and edit with their administrative authority.

Heh! its like they copied and pasted that, with some editing, just to create a story as a "New idea here!".

@Kursah did you notice the attribute change? its doesnt appear as an actual lock but just hiding the folder.

I did notice that, but like many things in IT, it does one thing but is advertised as doing something entirely different.

lol it's using attrib, it's bloody using the hide attribute and a plaintext password check.

Do they even know NTFS has like... real filesystem based encryption they could have just uh... used?

Sorry, but this is horrible for hiding from anyone with better computer skill than an absolute novice. Kill it with fire.

This method isn't new (seem similar before) and honestly it's quite awful, Few third party programs out there that do the job and much better with encryption on the locked folders
