if you talking about a computer you use then yesit can and it is supposed to check and set the time correctly.

it sets the time by the time zone you enter or at the default time zone the operating system starts with at install.

if something, ie... a virus or worm got into the operating system and started messing with default settings, ie... trying to turn off protective settings, then you may see weird time setting on your computer.

if you reset it and it changes again then you have a serious problem to address because you will have malicious software running on your system.

or are you wanting to set up an old computer and clock acting screwy?

if thats the case then check for a dead bios battery causing bios to reset when you power off.

if your batt is dead than you will have to fix your time everytime you unplug the computer. your time messed up again I take it.. do you turn off the power going to the computer? (unplug it?).

My computer have lot sof problem.. it will sudden reboot itself and it will not always be 100% successful reboot. sometime sit will pause in screen. sometime sit will say physical dump of memory and sometimes it will say need 512k to start windows NT you have 0k.

once the computer fail to reboot itself it will pause in screen. onc ethat happend I must forcefully press and hold the power button and manually shut down and turn back on. sometimes I cant turn on.. it will have orange light. i have to wait 10-20min to turn on again.

I am wondering if the oftenly and suddenly date and time change is normal since the computer is all worn out and it is 7 and half years old.

date and time auto change it self to 2957, 4556, 2683 etc... is it normal? or is there some virus and hacker going on?

try reloading windows 98 (i assume thats what your running) or whatever operating system your using

and check inside the power supply, its probably chocked full of dust inside.

and for the rest of the computer physically removing every part and wiping it clean blowing out with air then reinstalling will probably bring it back to life.

Im not sure man, have you tried a reformat? I dont know whats going on with your spare rig, but it dont sound good. The battery sounds like its dead though but if your computer is still pluged into power when you turn it off than it should still hold time. (maybe not if the batt is totally drained, my cousins computers motherboard batt was pretty dead/powerless so it wouldnt hold time when unpluged from the wall for very long).

i think his PSU is spazzing from no air supply blocked with dust and everything else is PSU voltage related

have you checked for overheating?

you cant diagnose anything untill this is done

is it all dusty inside your case?

in the back of your computer look to see if any fans are not turning while it is turned on?

this probably wont help us at all but what is the name brand of the computer and is there a model number on it?

well i agree its so old it should be buried in a hole somewhere, but he might just want something for files and bookeeping and anything that works could do that.

uhh.. yeah I check the mobo and looks like its clean. I think its the insid psu but lazy to take look inside the psu or I just dont know how to open it up but I will open it up somehow

umm... not sure.. I usually take off the side case but I do hear loud.. very loud noise from the psu

well its all dusty before when I dont use it for years now after I start using it I clean the dust on the mobo but I think its the psu... or virus

it is a 1999 HP pavilion mini tower 466mhz celeron, 96mb ram extended to 199mb. model 6540c and I have 10gb hdd

Right now I dont know weather it is just an ordinary technical problem or a virus cause I just encounter with a "script kid" on msn not long ago. Im not sure if it is a virus problem or ordinary techical problem or both.

last time I cant connect to msn and I ask here and someone said if the date and time is wrong msn wont connect so he was right. so now I have a suspiction that it might be a virus... the "script kid" change my date and time for me cause he dont want me to login to msn. I encounter with a "script kid" not long ago... he added me on msn and pm me saying he know my conversation with my friend on msn.

yeah I scan it with TC Spy and it found like 200 of it. I think I have a combination problem... virus and ordinary technical problem.

I think you should reformat, maybe totally reset your HD by setting it to 0000's. I dont know how to do this humm I hope you dont have alot of data stored on this pc.. you would probably want to back up you stuff.

from what you describe it sounds like something is happening with the power supply.

if the fan in the power supply is still working then take notice of where all the wires are plugged into and write it down so you dont forget where they go later then carefully unplug every wire so the power supply is no longer connected to anything. if the fan was not working buy new power supply.

it is safer to do this next step after computers been unplugged all night so no power remains in power supply.

unplug the main power cord from the back of the power supply then there are 4 screws on the back of your case that hold it in. it should now just slide right out so you can find the small screws that hold the cover on. take off the cover and see how it looks, if full of dust clean with paint brush and blow into it to clean out the dust but dont touch things inside it. some things hold juice like a battery and can zap you good, thats why you use a paint brush.

after its all clean put everything back and try the computer and see how it acts.

if you need to buy a new power supply you will need a special power supply because its so old the new ones dont have the right plugs anymore. we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

after you have serviced the power supply come back and let us know whats going on.

reformat blanks out the hard drive then sets up a new file system on it to retreave data so when you reformat you are in effect starting over from scratch with a blank hard drive.

he may need to do this but first he needs to fix the power supply issue. incorrect voltage keeps everything from working right so first things first.

not whisle but I guess its screeching and one time it is the loudess.... my computer lay on back. when I start compute rit will sound so hard. when I roll my computer stand like it supose to it will stop the super loud noise... the super loud noise is like the fan of the psu like it has something touching it or something.

that sounds like the fan bearings have gone out. thats simple enough to fix.

do you have any old power supplies you could use?

if not you will have to find one with the same kind of connectors on it so it will work.

you cant just start soldering wires to make any psu work because they use different colored wires so you could cross them up and short out your whole system.

write down all the numbers on the power supply so you can find a replacement.

my guess is you will spend at the most about $25-$30 for a replacement power supply or if you feel willing to try it you can replace the fan with a cheap inexpensive case fan for about $10 by plugging in a regular case fan to replace the bad one after cutting off the old fan wires and making sure they dont touch anything.

after your power supply is fixed your computer should be up and running.

the next step is to see how it acts with power restored, from what you were describing it sounds like windows has been corrupted so as long as the computer is not powering off anymore a reformat would be the easiest and quickest fix.

trying to save files may bring the viruses with you to the new install so it would be best to just let go of whats there but if you cant then copy only your files and documents to another drive. any program downloads should be put on a disk but more than likely this is where the virus came from.

i always recommend having an external one button backup drive so you never lose anything important because you have it on the backup.
