PC doesn’t power on with 4 pin cpu connector plugged in

Hello all,

First post here as I’ve hit a brick wall with trying to troubleshoot my friend’s pc build.
Specs are as follows:
Motherboard - ASUS prime H310M-K (lga1151)
Cpu - Intel i5-6600 non k
RAM - Corsair vengeance DDR4
Power supply - Corsair CX750M
Graphics card - Gigabyte GTX 1060

So, where do I begin… This pc has a new motherboard, used cpu and new ram. I’ve tried a different cpu with a different board, it switches on and instantly turns back off. The same happens with this new set of hardware. I’ve tested with a spare psu and still the same thing happens. I’ve taken everything out of the case and set the board on cardboard with just the cpu, cpu power connector and mainboard connector in. Still nothing. If I keep the 4 pin cpu power out, the pc turns on. If I plug it in while it’s on, it cuts out again. If I take the cpu out and leave the 4 pin in, it stays on. I’ve used 2 different CPUs now and still nothing works. The board is brand new only being powered up for the first few times but I cannot get this pc to stay on at all. It’s instant on then back off. Both power supplies work fine. The CPU worked fine before and the RAM is also brand new although it can be shrugged off as I’ve tested without RAM in there.

Please help me I’m at a loss of what to even try next. My mate’s already annoyed he’s had to buy newer components as he’s a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to spending money but he’ll buy what I’ve told him, hence the ram and board. He bought a used CPU from eBay which of course said “tested and fully working.” Only way I could make sure of this is if I put it in my own build but I can’t as I’ve got a different board that won’t fit his CPU.

Thanks in advance, hopefully this is a simple resolve.

you need the RAM.

Carboard box. Only the mobo, psu, cpu, cpu cooler and one stick of ram (if you have more then one try them one at a time, and in different slots)

Did you insert the RAM or not while testing. Cause the PC will power ON for sometime but if detects no memory it will give an error code or just shutdown. Also check the mobo's QVL list for RAM compatibility.

from what i understood, if there is no problem with the cpu pins on the motherboard, it must be a faulty motherboard because you already ruled out everything else.

I’ll have to send the board back and arrange a new one be delivered then. Thanks pal, will update the thread if my issue persists.

Test cpu in a motherboard at a shop, otherwise your motherboard or powersupply are bad, (CX line are poor quality)

I’ve tested with a different psu, same issue persists, I’m going to get a replacement board and see what happens
