So I built a new pc i7 6700 Not overclocked gtx 1070 (ASUS PRO GAMING) @ 110% GPU speed (gaming mode) mobo is asus pro gaming b150 Power supply is 750W Gold. So in game, the pc hangs. Initially, the hang that occurs is mid game and there is a constant buzzing sound, I can not move or restart the computer but only choice is to press the power button. After a few hangs, I decided to ask for tech support in blizzard. They suggested that I use a sound card. Now, using a sound card, the hanging still continues but the sound (something high pitched like wheels rotating on asphalt (eeek) )is only for a split second. what can I do?

It has crashed on the following games:
CS GO
Overwatch
PUBG

SO FAR I'VE TRIED:
UPDATING VIDEO CARD
USED DDU TO REMOVE VIDEO CARD DRIVERS TO INSTALL AGAIN
INPLACE UPGRADE FOR WINDOWS 10
MAKE GPU POWER 100%

Run another game. If you dont have another game download Unigine Superposition. All else fails do a clean install of Windows.

I did an in place upgrade and it also freezes (also occasionally) on other games. Do you think it is more of a software (Windows) problem than a hardware (e.g. RAM or GPU) problem?

Could very well be an operating system problem. Is this a fresh windows install or did you just move an old hard drive into your newly built machine? If so that's step 1, back up anything you need and reinstall windows. This will rule out conflicting drivers from your old PC. If it's a fresh install already disregard this. :)

Also I can't believe Blizzard support told you to get a sound card, they just wasted your money! :shadedshu:

Could be a RAM or PSU problem. I would try running Prime95 for a bit and see if you crash then memtest86 to see if your RAM is stable.

The buzzing could be coil whine which can be louder on load screens, still frames during games...that might be your noise.

Its not a blanket windows issue as my nephew plays wow on win 10. One thing I would suggest is to ignore the sound that happens after the freeze occurs as that's merely a symptom of the problem and in my opinion it's only confusing the matter, The reason I say that is because if it's happening after the crash or the freeze it's good information to add but I would add it after the fact what do you want to find out is what's happening before or up to the freeze you should be able to run a diagnostic tool or a monitoring tool to get an idea of what temperatures and frequencies are present

some "just to be sure options" would be

malware scan
sfc/scannow (in elevated cmd prompt)
repair/reinstall game
remove /reinstall drivers.
use "debug" mode in nvidia cntrl panel to set any factory OC back to Reference /Nvidia spec.

I monitor my temperature regularly because I am OCD that way. My GPU never reaches above 65 degrees celsius. The buzzing sound I receive, I am sure is from the game not from GPU this is because I remove my earphones before resetting pc and sound comes from earphone. Symptoms of hanging really comes from hitting an opponent usually something w/ a sharp sound (e.g. cs go headshot)

I did an inplace upgrade as suggested by windows tech. My hard drive is also bought together (brand new) with my PC.

I can't believe a "windows tech" recommended an inplace upgrade. To resolve issues, I never recommend an inplace upgrade. Always a fresh load.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Put the card back to stock...does it do it then?
Tried new/older drivers?

Please list complete system specs...

Sounds like an os/driver/ram thing.... certainly not a psu issue.

I actually never OCD the card manually. The GPU is GTX 1070 ASUS STRIX. I only use the factory OC setting that it gives.

I get that... put it back to stock and see if it still happens.

Put your specs in the system specs list so everyone can see it. Should be in your profile somewhere.

Actually I now run it on gaming mode (OC Mode being the factory OC), and it has happened about 2 days ago. Do you have any other possible fixes?

Reset the BIOS to default settings and make sure to enable XMP if applicable.
Also, remove and reseat the graphics card, RAMs. I am pretty sure this is a hardware problem.
A good way to know if the OS has frozen or the system has frozen is by pressing the Num Lock key a few times and check if the light is steady. If the LED does not change states even after pressing num lock, then it is likely the hardware which has caused the freeze.

EDIT: Update to the latest BIOS if applicable.

Correct me if I am wrong, people tell me that if it is a hardware problem the errors should happen regularly? And you say that there is a pretty good chance of a hardware problem, which hardware do you think it is and how do I make sure? thanks!

Is Prime95 the same with Memtest in terms of testing RAM?

Sort of but Prime95 won't point out RAM instability specifically like memtest86 does. It'll put a decent load on your system though so it will test out your PSU. Since it froze outside of games chances are your GPU should be ok.

Electronics can fail at any time and in any way. It might not be regular also.
Given the nature of your problem, firstly I would eliminate any setup issues. Loose RAM/GPU, shorting of board on chassis. Firstly, take out and reseat the RAMs. Check processor temperatures and power supply voltages while gaming.
If everything looks good, the culprit can be any one or more out of the motherboard, RAM, GPU, PSU and even CPU (unlikely though). Though I am 90% sure, given the nature of your problem, it seems to be faulty/incompatible or loose RAM.
Also as I mentioned, update to the latest motherboard BIOS revision.

Here are a few stress test utilities that can help you rule out hardware specific issues:
1. CPU stability: Prime95, OCCT
2. RAM stability: Memtest86, IntelBurnTest
3. PSU stability: Prime95 (for CPU) + Unigine Heaven 4.0 (for GPU). Keep AIDA system stability test screen open in the background (don't run). Keep everything like that for 15 mins approx and then check minimum and maximum voltages and also voltage during the tests from the graph. Temperature can be found from here as well.
4. GPU stability: Unigine Heaven 4.0, 3D Mark or any graphics intensive game after you have made sure the CPU, RAM and PSU is fine.

The system is not overclocked at all. I believe 2400mhz ram. and CPU clocks about 3800-3900mhz according to HWMONITOR

2. RAM stability: Memtest86, IntelBurnTest

How long do you recommend I run Prime95? Is HW Monitor as reliable as AIDA is to see PSU voltage?

For GPU stability beside those programs that @itsakjt said, i would also try a furmark test

I did a furmark test for about 15minutes graph is pretty constant and temps below 70C. Do you recommend I run longer?

I know this sounds preposterous but I actually had a similar issue many years ago and it took me nearly 2 years to get to the bottom of it by chance. It turned out to be the onboard sound on my MSI motherboard getting hot/bugging out and shutting down my PC. The computer would just hang and all I'd hear is this persistent buzzing noise - it was actually the last millisecond of audio my computer played at the time in a neverending loop.

I came home with an IR gun and decided to have a play around and noticed the sound chip hitting temperatures high enough to make me sweat bullets. Replaced the mobo and the system was fine.

15 minutes is more than enough
back to your problem: you should monitor all temperatures on your pc because sometimes too high temperature is reason why system freeze (not only GPU temps)
