Pci express x16 compatibility

Have you ever had problems installing a new video card in an older pci express x16 1.0 slot ?

I have an older motherboard (msi p965 neo) and I'm thinking of buying an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 next month.

I got no problem with a GTX 275 in a PCI-E 1.0 mobo - it might be about 5% slower though than when using a PCI-E 2.0 mobo

some problems randomly do occur, but its usually to do with cheap motherboards, than a PCI-E problem.

most of the problems i read of are on the 945 chipset, not the 965 you have.

Should cause no problems at all. Iv'e had a PCI-E 2.0 card in a 1.1 slot(680i board) and it was fine. You really won't see much to any of a performance hit also.

I am running a pair of PCIe 2.0 cards on an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe S939 motherboard (1.0a PCIe slots) with no issues. Like Mussels said, the issue is with specific motherboards from time to time.

In general the backwards compatibility of PCIe works as advertised.

my brother had loosely similar issues to yours (problems with 2D, mostly) with an xfx 5870, on an 890FX board. its just a bad BIOS on some cards. not the boards fault.

Perhaps, but if you read the troubleshooting steps I took, my card worked flawlessly on a P45 (PCI-e2) Mobo with the stock VGA bios, so i believe it was an incompatiblity between the Mobo bios and VGA bios OR a PCI-e 1 compatibility issue !
