Pentium 4 - which one?

Hello guys, some time ago I posted here a build for a pentium 4 pc, well it went well and now it is like this:

Specs:
Asus p4p800e deluxe
4x512mb corsair xms ddr400 cl2
pentium 4 3.0ghz northwood (overclocked to 3.6ghz)
ati radeon x1950pro 512mb ddr3
500gb seagate 7200rpm hdd (sata)
zalman cpu cooler
cooler master cm690 case

So my question is, besise the pentium 4 extreme edition which is very expensive, what is the best cpu I can put in this motherboard? Is a 3.4ghz pentium 4 prescott a good choice? The thing is that a lot of people say that the northwood is better, I really don't know what to go for.
Any suggestions?

It have been a long time since I saw this colour scheme for a motherboard. I just wonder why would you like another Pentium cpu from the one you have now which is overclocked? Reaching 4GHz at a Pentium 4 is as far as it can goes but that is not often. You are likely to be limited at 3.7GHz or 3.8GHz . The heat for that would be massive and I doubt that cooler you have could take it.

Just for the sake of having one of the best cpus the board can handle. But for what I know, the pentium 4 I have running at 3.6ghz is already as good as it is going to get.

@brandonwh64 I know, I did this pc just for fun but I know am liking having 2 pcs, just this one is noticably slow while web browsing.
Would you think a core 2 quad would handle everything just fine?

Are you having this rig for retro gaming or retro programs? Is it windows XP or pre Xp like windows 2000 or before?

Well If you could a Pentium 4 cheap like less than $20 than it is fine. Even then I don't recommend it unless it is for nostalgia purposes.

Sorry your board cannot support a core 2 quad which an Lga 775. Yours is socket 478.

I did this pc just for fun, and yeah it runs xp.
I know the board cant handle it and was saying that maybe I could put together a system with a core 2 quad.

You can try looking up in the forums here the buying/selling asking whether anyone wants to sell away their 775 motherboard and cpu cheaply. Great way to learn about old hardware.

Frankly a core 2 quad or even the xeon at that era is rather slow even compared to a new cheap intel board and cpu now. Web browsing are more than adequate on a core 2 quad though.

I thought you wanna run old programs natively.

Well I am running a Pentium G3258 haswell, it is my first PC build since the core 2 duo. Thinking about it I thought I should have went for a xeon and modify my asus board that is lying around lol. Not sure where you stay but this thread would help your quest for old hardware alot. Trying making a request.

For normal use Pentium G3258 would be better being a new hardware.

I would only play with old hardware just for retro programs and retro games purposes or running xp natively.

If you want cheap, you can build a AMD APU system fairly cheap and it has a good IGP for maybe minecraft and lower end gaming.

I suggest a northwood over a prescott. I've got 2 3.2GHz Northwoods gathering dust. Discovered after initial post I have a p4p 800e deluxe too, lol.

I like the idea of you doing this, just because!

P.s. If you need a northwood, let me know.

Stick with the Northwood, no point in going with the Preshott.
