Petition for AGP 4770

This card wont see the light of the day from what I hear, but, boy would it be a sweet upgrade for some AGP systems for $99 :rockout:

And lemonadesoda, I think I have the same Asrock mobo you do and yeah, it can perform as well if not better than any comparable PCIe system out there! Cheers to Via and Asrock for giving old AGP rigs a second chance :toast:

Yep, the Conroe865PE and 775i65G are two relatively unknown and underestimated mainboards. They really are amazing boards. Of course you wouldnt build a new system with these today, BUT, if you have such a system, then AGP is very viable.

We rolled out a number of 775i65G's due to a high investment in AGP fireGL cards and DDR. When s775 came out for Conroe/Q6600 on AGP they were a superb upgrade. DDR2 was expensive at the time... and we could migrate the WHOLE PC, incl. the HDD without the need to reinstall windows.

It was the fastest, cheapest upgrade in our corporate history. We moved 4 machines from P4 AGP FireGL DDR to Q6600 AGP FireGL DDR in under 20 minutes per machine!

see i'd be interested in onc eof these to pair with a 754 setup which would allow me to have a media center pc for dvr and easy home movie playing (no need to burn a disk). being that I record home movies in hd and watch hd television, this would help alleviate the weakness of the cpu.

maybe put forward a suggestion that TPU will run its own design contest? that will take some of the pressure off them.

I really want an AGP 40nm GPU for my AGP board, atleast make it one last push for AGP users, what about starting an official petition on onlinepetition.com and i'd rather have Sapphire make the card rather than powercolor

From my own experience with both Sapphire and PowerColour - I can honestly say they're as good as each other.

Well, I'd recommend a friend to get a PCI-e 2.0 x16 board, but if he was sticking to AGP I'd probably recommend him this, though for that to happen I'd need friends who have custom PCs :rolleyes:

Though myself, I'd just get a PCI-e card.

if you have a quad and an AGP slot youre using a mobo like ASRock or something in thoes lines and you have a 865 or a VIA chipset.

Can't vote since neither option is "No"

But let's be practical here, any motherboard that supports AGP would support a rather aging processor by today's standards, at most perhaps something along the lines of a Socket 939 athlon x2 series, etc. Such processors while good for everyday use would severely limit the capability of a videocard like the 4770.

I wonder with your board if you could do a 4770 driver based bridgeless crossfire setup. AGP+PCIe. I've heard of claims of hacked SLI 7900 running on your board. Interesting thoughts....

I did read the thread just didn't look at his specs, I wasn't aware there were socket 775 boards that also had APG ports. I'll be honest I'm an AMD guy and haven't owned a Intel system since an old HP I had years ago with a Celeron A 433 Mhz. And AMD stopped using AGP with the AM2 socket, with the exception of the Dual VSTA Boards which could use socket am2 chips with an adapter card and had both AGP and PCIe x16 ports.

I'm on an asrock 775i65G. This board doesnt have any PCIe slots, unfortunately.

Why do people dwell on old technology so much? Move on, if they make an AGP version it will be more expensive than a higher powered PCI-E variant, so whats the point? Move on for christs sakes! Many people still have old, AGP reliant boards and yes, I can appreciate that. But if they start moaning about not being able to play "x" game that was just released smoothly, then surely thats the sign to get with the times so to speak?

If you have a perfectly good CPU, plenty of RAM, HDD full of applications and data already installed, an OEM copy of Windows, a PCI soundcard, then WHY OH WHY would you want to upgrade that just for a new GPU?

To upgrade my system, this is what it would cost:

New CPU significantly better than my Q6600: $250+
New RAM: $100
New Windows: $150
New (pro quality) soundcard: $100+

Total = $600++

Now add in all the time to reinstall the whole PC incl. organise and backup old data, build new machine, install OS, OS updates, install applications = EASILY 6 hours. At say $50 per hr, call that $300 of time or opportunity cost.

Total incl. backup and new install = $900++ , and that assumes recycling the old HDDs, which, as you know, is not the cleverest solution. So add another $100 for a new drive, and you are talking $1000.

Just buy an "AGP" version of the GPU.
