I am running a P2 955 on an msi 790fx-gd70 and my temps are unusually high. on stock freq. and stock voltages on stock cooler it idles at 47c under load it hit 60c in about 3 minutes so I stopped prime 95 because I didn't wand to run any hotter. I installed my spin-q cooler and it idles at 43c and runs close to 60c under load. could this be bad readings from the mb temp sensors or a problem with the CPU?

Are you sure your heat sink is seated properly? With not too much thermal grease or not too little?

I wondered that, so I removed the HSF, wiped away the residue, cleaned both surfaces with alcohol. used a dot about the size of 1 1/2 grains of rice on the center of the chip. seated the HSF and gave it a small twist and locked it down. I haven't had any problems in the past so I assumed I was doing it correctly.

thanks for the heads up SIW, cool tool. unfortunately it reads the same for temps.

a bad diode, or a bad connection, or many other things.

I highly doubt unless you have horrible case flow, it is actually running that temp. the only accurate way to measure is with a known good diode put as close to the heatsource (cores) as possible.

My 940 reads as running higher than my 4850 and it is first in the loop, I honestly believe it is just the variance in the diode.

are the diodes in the MB or the CPU itself?

Could be that he has other 'hot' items in his PC (you get the pun there?). Make sure you have adequate cooling for all your items. Also, make sure that it's vented on top of your case. Heat rises

I have an intake fan on the top of the tower that I figured would feed cool air to the HSF, I'll flip it and use it for exhaust. right now I am running with the side panel off so it can breath, but i"ll see if reversing the fan helps.

I have always found on closed cases running with the side off actually increases temps.

And yes the fan should be exhaust.

If you get your hand near the heatsink is it real warm feeling?

There is definitely some heat coming off of it but but not as much as I would expect with the temps i'm getting. I closed up the case and i'm not seeing much of a change in temps.

If you touch the heatsink under load does it feel hot?

It is possible that the package is not great and so the heat isn't being transferred correctly to the HSF. Confirm this with other TPUers temps with 940s clocked similarly with the same voltages. If not then these chips just run that hot under full load. :toast:

It feels warm to the touch but not hot. here's another strange thing, in AMD overdrive, CPU Core 0-3 all read exactly the same temp all the time as if it were one sensor reading for all cores. I thought they should read indipendantly, and I am getting a 0 reading from CPU diode, NB diode and TMPIN3.

So binge, you think it could be a problem with the heat spreader not contacting the Die properly? have you seen this before?

As far as I'm aware they run just as cool as the other x4's similar voltage and all. It really does seem like it's an isolated issue. Sad to say though.

I really Hate to RMA the thing unless there truly is a problem with the chip. any chance it could be the MB?

I did, stock frequency and voltage. 47c idle, 60c under load which is when I stopped prime 95 before it got any higher.

Man guess I misread the OP, I dunno what's going on. Possible it's a bad sensor but if it's warm/hot to the touch then it could be right.

Not sure what my next course of action is. I did encounter this problem before with another system. temps were reading very high. so I moved the processor to a different board and it read 20c cooler. I don't want to RMA good hardware but I'm not sure how to isolate the problem to a specific component. any advice?

Is that honestly enough thermal paste? and what kind is it? I always cover the whole CPU but a very thin amount and i find that works great for me.:ohwell:
