It appears my stock cooler has gone AWOL, so I'm going to have to procure one elsewhere. Can anyone recommend a cheap cooler suitable for a 140W (or 125W, unsure how to tell what revision it is) Phenom II X4? It needs to be able to fit inside a COOLER MASTER Wave Master TAC-T01-EK.

Thanks.

That's a little more than I wanted to spend, and I think it's too tall for the case. This case was made in 2003, when CPU coolers were tiny.

Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Pro is just about the cheapest cooler money can buy that isn't essentially OEM.

EDIT: The Hyper T2 is probably a better option.

A cooler with a 92 mm fan should fit, like the CRYORIG M9a.

That only supports up to 90W, though.

Alternatively, go on ebay and buy an OEM one, they're like £6.

965 BE C2 is the only Phenom II with a 140W TDP.

Yes, I have a 965 BE, but don't know whether mine is a C2 or C3.
It can be seen from heatspreader.

The 212 evo should fit in that case, the cooler is 6.3" (159mm) tall and the case is 7.8"(198mm) wide. Its also an old case so it probably doesn't have much room behind the motherboard tray for cables. You should have about 1/2" to spare.

Other option would be the original Wraith cooler for am3. Its about the same price and cooling capacity of the 212, but its a top down cooler, being about 3.15" (80mm) tall.

You can catch the 212 on sale for 20-25$ from time to time, but even at 30$ both of these coolers are a good value. If you keep all the mounting hardware on the 212 evo you can probably reuse it as well on additional projects in the future. (it fits multiple sockets)

While the Hyper 212 is cheap (currently $25, $34 for the dual fan model), it leaves ya CPU 11C hotter than moderately priced alternatives such as the Scythe Fuma Rev B ($45) which match or exceed the performance of $90 coolers such as the Cryorig R1 and Noctua NH-D15.

I was able to find a cheap BNIP Vortex 752, I'll be happy with that as I don't plan to overclock. Thanks for your recommendations.

It looks like that Vortex 752 is a 95w cooler. Not that it won't work, it just might be louder than you'd like to maintain temps under load. You could also look into undervolting the CPU to lower the heat output.

I read a review where it was tested with a Core2 Quad EE, with a 130W TDP, and it performed adequately.

An AM3+ or FM2+ Wraith would be cheap and good enough.

Hey Red_Machine,

Do you mean the hardwaresecrets review using the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 overclocked to 3.33Ghz? The 752 measures 92C at core with 55Dba. That's a poor showing. The CPU is incredibly hot and the heatsink fan is running quite noisily.
The Vortex 752 is a relatively inexpensive cooler and so we could not wait for a great performance from it. But it performed practically as bad as the Thermaltake ISGC-100 and the SilverStone NT06-E, and worse than the Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 Pro, a simpler and cheaper cooler. But the worst thing on the Vortex 752 is the fact it is a very noisy cooler. Even with idle CPU, its noise is bothersome, becoming annoying when our CPU was under full load. It made more noise than the Intel stock cooler. So, there is no way we can recommend buying this cooler, since there are cheaper, quieter and more efficient options on market.

That graph they have on the bottom is sort of misleading, its not total CPU core temp, its degrees C over ambient, so if the room is 20C the cooler saying 72 is = 92c. They would do this to account for a non temperature controlled room or a test that took place over multiple days.

I agree - A Wraith style cooler with it's low profile will do the job as long as you're not trying to crank some serious clocks from it.

Still have a Dr Thermal TI-V77L for my overclocked 462. This turns at 5000rpm like a turbine. Hehehe I also have this Vortex since many years and it comes with Intel and AMD adapters.

That looks in fact nice, with a low noise adapter or a fan controller, that would be cool (pun intended) on my S462 test system. :)
