Not seeing much of a difference other than HT and price. The 940 is about $35 cheaper. Newegg has the the 940 for only $190 ;) Which one oc better?

Not supported for my board, :ohwell: Hopefully when I get ready to update it will:D

CPU List

The motherboard does not need an official bios update, the processor 'should' be detected as unknown processor but it will still work 90% of the time.

I'd say buy the 955 and if it works which it 'should' you're set, if it doesn't detect invest a little money on a new AM2+/AM3 board :)

That is nothing to do with the CPU not being supported.

That is more to do with the old Agena Phenoms being shit overclockers. The 955 is fast enough but they usually can get around 3.8 GHz on air. I say try your existing motherboard if it works and overclocks well its a keeper, if it doesn't detect the CPU or the overclocking is restricted by a new board.

To save money further I'd go with the Phenom X4 810 they can also reach around 3.8 GHz on air and will perform the same as the 955 once you exceed 3.2 GHz.

Edit:

TheMailMan is correct,

It supports the Deneb architecture. It should work :toast:

I'm not seeing the 955 in the list

Its not in the list, however the Phenom II 720, 805, 810, 910, 925 and 945 all use the same Deneb core and hence the 955 is innately compatible.

The 955 is probably not on the list yet as it only just been released and is unpopular due to its price, but it is irrelevant as Deneb support is clearly shown with the '945' being listed and the only difference between the 945 and 955 is multiplier other than that they are practically the same.

As for your decision, if you're overclocking all the phenom II range overclock to around 3.6-3.8 GHz area. It makes little sense financially to buy the 955 when you can pick up the 810 that will give the same level of overclock and performance.

Edit:

Alternatively the Phenom 940 BE would make more sense, you loose DDR3 support but it shares the same 6 MB cache as the 955! (opposed to The Phenom 810 has 4 MB cache but has both DDR2 and DDR3 support)

No unlocked bus multiplier for 945. It is not a Black Edition chip.

DDR3 has little to no benefits apart from leaving a huge hole in your pocket.

You'd be better off with DDR2 PC8500 @ 1066 MHz than DDR3 PC3-8500 @1066 MHz because its cheaper.

The only time I’d advise DDR3 with today's prices is if you have an unlimited budget and plan on extreme multi-tasking and/or encoding and then I'd advise a premium bandwidth range e.g. PC3-16000 @ 2000MHz or faster. Even then the price wouldn't justify the performance gain but people with a unlimited budget usually do not have sense to listen to people like me that advice them for the best deals.

For a gaming rig, even an extreme enthusiast gaming rig DDR3 isn't a necessity, you'd probably struggle to obtain an extra 2 FPS increase. Take a look at this review, DDR3 makes no difference games and very little difference in most other applications too.

Full review:
http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1782/amd_phenom_ii_ddr2_vs_ddr3_performance/index.html

Edit:

Although I must admit that DDR3 @ 16000 MHz and 18000 MHz is getting cheaper around £65-80 for a 4 GB kit, this is still around £15-30 more than DDR2 @ 1066MHz for a small performance gain. On a Intel based motherboard they usually can tolerate memory at such a high DDR3 bandwidth but AM2/AM3 usually supports a maximum specification of DDR3 @ 1333!

Then just get any Phenom II BE and OC the piss out of it. :toast:

The 945 is the exact samething as a 955, just 200mhz slower. So if the 955 would only get 100mhz OC, then your 945 will only see a 300mhz (for the most part) which in the end would get you the same clocks.

The PI's did clock like crap, but your 100mhz overclock is really really low as I was able to get 3.22ghz out of mine on the stock cooler.

Either way I would say 955 if your going to spend the cash.

945 is not unlocked, so it's not exact.
