Adobe is introducing a subscription model for many of its most popular programs, including Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

Up to now, customers had perpetual access by paying a single fee for Adobe's Creative Suite.

From next month, continuing access to the programs, either individually or as a whole, will demand a monthly fee.

Standalone versions will still be available but will not be upgraded.

The change was announced at Adobe's annual Max conference, at which it details the latest updates to its products.

I know how many people here use photoshop. Is it me or is this really just crazy?

Great way to rip yourself right out of the consumers favor Adobe.
I have a feeling this will not go well.. At all..

I still use CS2 so I am not to worried lol they can do the subscription thing if they want to and ill stick to CS2. If it really does get that bad Ill just have to test out GIMP and find a stable version to stick with once CS2 no longer works

It really isn't that much of a price difference over buying the program outright.

The upgrade cost for Creative Suit is about $550. A year subscription for Adobe Cloud is $360 if you already have CS3 or newer.

It's pretty much the same as it is now, you buy a version and that's the only version you have any right to use bar the odd minor upgrade, this will likely be preferred by a lot of companies who are forced to upgrade to latest versions after paying $1000 just for one or 2 extra benefits. Software as a service will become the norm

Thing is.. People can still buy it outright... Just like they did in the past. There is no change, other than people reading a headline and passing judgement on it.

The subscriber option will be good for businesses that use their products.

The problem is that the last stand alone version will be CS6. So to get access to any new features people will have to switch to the subscription service.

monthly fee?
if they want to use that, why dont they make online version, that need registration and monthly fee
not for desktop version

i still using cs3, maybe the newer CS offers many features but i guess its getting too much when all you need is just for pic editing

I don't think it is necessarily bad. I mean a lot of people pirate Adobe Creative Suits for down right every day tasks that could be performed perfectly fine with an open-source product. There are alternatives for most of the things: CorelDraw- Inkscape, Photoshop- GIMP, 3D renderer- Blender/ Bryce 7 (not free, but cheap), Maya-offers a full year a free license for students etc. etc. These coupled with a few smaller programs/brushes could do things like that short movie Sintel and many others. Overall better solution, MS Office 365 is subscription based. Things are moving along that's it.

GIMP, Inkscape, Blender,.... just think scr** Adobe if you are a pretty basic user. Some professionals might be able to do the same depending on their needs.

Edit: this is made without Adobe:

Hmm, I am a hardcore worker in PS CS6,monthly subscription have bad and good, like anything in life, the good it is the price, for me 20EU/month equal 240EU/year, a full PS CS6 it cost me 900EU,so for 3-4years the price it is the same but with monthly subscription I have allways the last version/update of ps, the bad it is the security, I don't trust cloud, I have projects for products not on the market yet, I must be 100% sure that my files it will not be seen on anybody from outside of project; another bad thing, if a update will broke the ps, you can't just install last working ps(because it will install allways last update), so for 2-3 days until the update it is fixed what will I do(1 day without work on big project mean a lot of waste money); another bad thing:even in the major cities of "civilized" country, the internet can be broke/dead for some time(like winter or after lighting storm), so I can't work...for me(beside the price I find a little high for just 1 product) it will be the most bad of this, it was good if they let us to choose, for a person who make at least 500EU/month, 20EU it is ok to have last version of a good software, but you will need a good internet provider beside a good pc...I see the world it is moving from hold/have to rent, but the infrastructure it is no ready for this, and it is bad for not giveing choice...for light editing Ps CS6 and Gimp will do for many years from now(it will be a boost for gimp, this movement from adobe)...

am i the only one who heard this news (CS6 being the last standalone) 1-2yrs ago? maybe cuz i go to certain events/presentaions...

how many people REALLY need the suite & the previous segregated mini suites sucked if you needed one of the other apps just for a single project

I still use CS2 so I am not to worried lol they can do the subscription thing if they want to and ill stick to CS2. If it really does get that bad Ill just have to test out GIMP and find a stable version to stick with once CS2 no longer works

CS2 is free for some months, how can it not work? unless you mean future windows versions breaking it

i find it strange that people would even think of threatening to move to gimp, the heck is wrong with just staying on CS6 (or any older version)? the few added features every version hardly make the others obsolete, if they were, so many people wouldnt already be using them for years

Hmm, this days I was thinking that for newcomers it is bad, I learned how to use photoshop in that 30 day trial period(back in CS1 days), even the classroom course from Adobe take me more than 2-3 months, so I think with ni alternative to online subscription the base of people who will learn/know Photoshop will shrink, and this is baaad for Adobe in long run...
