PICe x16 4.0 on Ryzen - fps drops on 3080

I have a question and ive been having some issues with Warzone only, dropping fps down to 60-70 at times and then it goes all the way up to 180. I dont think its a performance issue but rather configuration and compatibility. I have the latest drivers for everything, latest bios. Nothing else can be updated. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

After watching this video this guy created some doubts in my mind about my pci express config. As you see in gpu-z mine shows 4.0 and he has 3.0 but I think it has to do with him having an intel system.

i play warzone since day one and i swap GPUs and Hardware in General very often.

in the most cases it was due to the cloud saved Config Files of the game which does not work properly when using another GPU or CPU.
i'd recommend starting with deleting the whole Call of Duty Folder under Documents (you only lose your In Game Settings)

and i can confirm that is has nothing to do with PCIe Generations. i used Gen 3 Cards on X570 and Gen 4 Cards on Z490.. (and vice versa)

1. PCIe 4.0 is better than 3.0. If you're using your GPU without a riser (as in plugged straight into the mobo) then leave it at 4.0. There's no reason not to. The 3080 is a 4.0 card. And yes, the reason why the other person doesn't have 4.0 is because they're running an Intel system, which doesn't support 4.0 (yet).
2. Get rid of Armoury Crate. It's practically malware. Use the support page for your motherboard to update stuff.

Apart from that, I'd try @WarTherapy1195's suggestion. I personally don't have experience with the game so I'm of no help - although I've seen a lot of reports of this kind of issue in this exact game.

thanks for the quick reply, im gonna get rid of armoury crate but this is a freshly installed windows 10. Normally o save my profile and just import them when im done but this time around i downloaded everything from the cloud. this image is from last week. thx again.

And yes my video card is connected directly into the motherboard, not using a riser.

Your PCI-E is set to 4.0 as GPU-Z reports.

Do you have any stutter (even just 1 tiny freeze) when those drops are happening?
Usually when FPS drops occur, there is some short bottleneck happening.
Component wise you system shouldn’t have any bottleneck, but when software is in the middle things get messy.
Also it could be drivers (not just GPU) or some background process... Since you used ArmoryCrate for drivers update, I guess your chipset drivers aren’t from AMD web site. Always get those straight from AMD.
What power plan are you using?

I’ve also saw such behavior some times when DRAM settings are not optimal. Did you just Enable DOCP for the 3600MHz? And your Ram is 32 or 64GB? and how many sticks?

And this is the point to suggest/request to fill your profile with detail system specs for easy access from anyone. Like most of us have under our avatar.

I have 4 sticks of 16Gb each and the bios is set to DOCP @ 3600mhz, the only "OC" i did was to lower my cpu voltage, its set now at 1.31v and cpu is set at 4.4Ghz on all cores. System is 100% stable, on the new call of duty im getting well over 220Fps at 1440p. Again the issue seems to be isolated to Warzone, even multiplayer I think its fine on Modern Warfare.
My power supply is from Corsair, 1200W and I bought with the video card, its only about a month old.

Have you tested it with stock CPU settings? Yes it is stable, not crashing, rebooting etc... but still. PCs are far too complicated and not a"black"or "white"devices.
How many games have you tested?

it being in pcie 4 or pcie 3 wouldnt affect GPU performance , not unless you halved pcie3 to x8 would you start to see small drops in performance. much like pcie3, it came well before it was needed. the pcie3 bandwidth isnt saturated by HW yet, so its not holding performance back.

Despite what others have said, boot in to the Bios and change the PCI-e revision setting back to 3 from 4 and test.
Then report back.

definitely be sure you have pcie4 enabled if you dont, storage drives will "benefit" from having it , as the bandwidth is increased with 4 over 3, but im guessing the only place you'd notice that increase in bandwidth is in a benchmark. gpu's on the other hand wont show you any change between pcie3 & 4, even between 2 & 4 the change is minimal. gpu's dont saturate the old technology, so it is no surprise that the new tech wouldnt bring any gains.

Necropost, but I'm also having performance issues with my 3080 in PCIe Gen 4 that are only resolved by switching to Gen 3 (Specs: Ryzen 5900x, Asus TUF B550 Plus Wifi, Aorus 3080 Xtreme). I can't seem to find a lot of posts anywhere addressing this specific issue or if there have been any updates or anything. Do you know anything more? Thanks.

It can't be Armoury Crate. I have the issue even with the Armoury Crate option in the BIOS disabled, and with Armoury Crate not installed and on a fresh install of Windows. Furthermore, sometimes the computer won't post properly (hangs on the VGA step, then reboots and will sometimes automatically enable the CSM in the BIOS in order to boot, which I then have to go back and manually disable... etc), which never happens with the PCIe port set to Gen 3.

Edit: Graphics card is plugged directly into mobo without a riser and I'm using PC-3200 RAM in dual channel

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
So that guy in particular uses a cherry picked, massive 10900K oc that's latency optimized (and I have doubts whether it is even 24/7 stable) to get those numbers. Warzone in particular loves lots of cores that are low latency. I have a similar setup to him and I can't touch those numbers, even with 39ns latency in aida.

It may be your ram setup or background processes running that are causing the dips -- but warzone is also known to particularly dislike older ryzen CPUs, I would look around at other setups using the 3900x/xt to see what they get.

If you're getting frame-time spikes/hitches instead of just 70FPS lows then it might be network or Input/Output (IO) related. But a 3900x with 3200 mhz dual channel ram is pretty slow with lots of latency for high-fps so 60-70 fps lows actually sounds about right.
