Within the next month I shall be building an AM3 rig, I'm taking a chance to start with by getting a PII X2 550 with a Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P 790X motherboard and possibly unlocking all four cores. What I want to know is, if the cores are not unlockable, and I have the standard dual core overclocked to over 3.6, will it be enough to push decent frames through the GTX 275 @ 1920 x 1080 and not have major scaling problems?

At that res your using ALOT/MOSTLY more video card than processor. With that OC everything should play out just fine.

Hey Ken, how are you mate? What's your gaming experience like with the x3 720 and the HD 4830 twins and have you had any major problems with any of your games?

Everything on my system plays nice and smooth but I kinda tune down the game playing during the late spring + summer due to softball, softball, and more softball!! With Ghostbusters I play @ 1680 x 1050, maxed sittings, and not a single issue. Sometime this week I should be getting my 550 in so I can post up some benchys with that if you want.

I'll do some testing with Devil May Cry 4 benchmark, HawX benchmark, Street Fighter Benchmark, Ghostbusters, CoD World at War, and 3dmark 06 and Vantage if that sounds good.

most of the 550BE's are unlocking to quads so not a bad chip for $100 and will run anything out there

That sounds just the ticket mate......what about adding a couple of multi threaded games in there like Far Cry 2 or Supreme Commander:cool:

Cdawall - I'm hoping :) May buy a couple and edge my bets.

4 ghz would be very nice on air.....especially with all 4 cores, and all for only £80. And then I wake up :)

I'm interested to see results as well. Though one thing that always amazed me is how AMD would allow their cores to be unlocked, i always thought that most PII x2/x3 were chips from defective x4 chips. So if you do unlock the other 2 cores, your still working with the same amount of cache correct? or is more cache unlocked as each core is unlocked?

I believe more cache is unlocked, 512k L2 per core that is unlocked. The reason being is the L2 is attached to each core while the L3 is shared by all cores so when an additional core is unlocked you gain it's L2 cache.

Just don't buy the chip in thinking you actually are going to have four working cores. While most of them can unlock with the correct bios, the unlocked cores will not be very stable (unless you are really, really lucky) My PII x3 for example can unlock the extra core, I can boot into windows at any speed up to 3.8ghz. Unfortunately, any speed at any voltage the core is just not stable. Once OCCT is put to it I get an instant restart and a HTT flood error. For gaming, two cores is plenty and when overclocked the x2 can be paired with any high end video card.

Yep its a good point erocker. If it is only the dual, I will get my use out of it and see how it performs. If I still want a quad, I can soon get an X4 965 and put the X2 in a nice build for my girlfriend.
