Following its annual earnings report this morning, Sony has confirmed it is working on a successor to the PlayStation 3. In a post-report conference call, Sony executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato was queried about an increase in research and development costs for the company.

When asked what the "major driver" of R&D costs was, Kato said--via a translator--that one was "prototype research work, development work during the current fiscal year in [the] game segment."

He continued, "We have a portable NGP to be launched later this year, so we have development expenses to be incurred for this product and for the home equipment. The PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform--when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that--but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there." (Emphasis added.)

Kato's comments come as Sony's competitors are gearing up their own next-generation console efforts

No suprises there. PS3/Xbox360 are starting to look like relics in almost every regard. They don't have enough RAM for today's games and the graphics are lagging way behind what even mainstream gaming computers can do.

Not to mention, the big push towards motion sensing.

Lol i swear Microsoft,Sony and Nintendo will be keeping their lineups for another 3-4 years until releasing new console, then again must take that long to develop something "new" and creative.

It would be good for the entire gaming industry, with the focus on computer gaming. Without needing to have DX10 or 11 on current gen consoles, developers make games around the consoles then release it to PC. I personally cannot wait till next-gen consoles come out because that will mean DX11 games from the ground up will be made to take advantage of our graphics cards finally(not that they already don't, but I want more "efficient" graphics with regards to frames per second....cough cough smart use of tesselation...cough).

Just because something feels outdated doesn't mean it's not sufficient for next generations. The saying is that if it isn't broken, don't mess with it :D
I think their gamepads have improved from the PS1 to the PS2 and they just kept on with the PS3, I see no reason to change it IMO, unless they want to integrate more motion sensing into it to try and innovate kind of like what Nintendo did.

Its a fact.

They do have a new system coming out its being unveiled at E3.
You think the 360 and PS3 are out dated most of the wii is shovelware 2 gamecubes duct taped together. The next Nintendo will be hardly better than the current gen, if it is much better I'll eat my words literally.

I think it's a bit impractical to assume success for this new nintendo console. It seems like it might be another dreamcast, and not just because of the vmu similarities. Everyone who wants a wii already owns one, everyone who wants a ps3/360 already has one, and everyone who wants a portable nintendo system already has one... Graphically it really will be the dreamcast when the new consoles hit. Even worse. It's a relatively small step up from the current HD consoles, but the next gen of PS3 and xbox will be a huge step up. Ahead of PC hardware for a few months like last time.

I was going to say that. It should just be a microatx board with all the stuff in there. Then it will keep up with PC's

If you could run it without windows. Then its still a console.

No suprises there. PS3/Xbox360 are starting to look like relics in almost every regard. They don't have enough RAM for today's games and the graphics are lagging way behind what even mainstream gaming computers can do.

Not to mention, the big push towards motion sensing.

There is just 1 big problem and that is the fact they want to sell same things on two completelly different markets. These are multiplatform games. because of this, more powerful PC market is getting crappy rubbish looking outdated games and consoles are getting too demanding games. If you take console exclusives or PC exclusives they both look incredible on their own segments. For example Gran Turismo 4 on PS2. Despite its age it looks absolutelly incredible compared to even todays PC graphics and is imo the best you can get on PS2.
Then again on PC there is for example original Crysis. And then is Crysis 2 which shows what happens when they want to make it on both ends. Sure it looks ok at first glance but the fact is that it's completelly outdated for a year 2011.

Don't plan on getting great pc games when next gen comes out.
Now is probably the last time you'll have games out on pc that look better then consuls.
After next gen comes out consul games will look better then pc, just like they did the first year after 360s came out. After the year or so it takes for pc perf to catch up all you'll be getting is poor ports of consul games, if they keep porting them at all.

It goes way beyond graphics when it comes to PC gaming.

People who game on pc game on pc for specific reasons. The number 1# reason because it's PERSONAL COMPUTER, meaning you can personalized to your liking in every single possible way.

When you buy a console, you're stuck on that one console until 4-6 years later when the new comes out. I just laugh when I see special edition xbox's that have for example a MW2 or Halo cover lol That's the console version of an upgrade, a new face plate.

But it goes way beyond that. On PC, the replay value of games is 1000x than on console. Lets use games like L4D, COD4 and TF2.

On PC, people are constantly coming out with new maps for campaign, online, survivor...etc I can't even count how many custom and top top top quality maps I have for both L4D & L4D2. While on consoles they only have the maps that came with the game and the DLC that valved released and that's it. There's so many awesome mods for L4D like for example, the teletubby mod which is brilliant.

I guarantee there's almost no one playing L4D (1st one) on xbox atm, 'cause they're bored. And I always get the feeling on console as soon as a new game comes out, they completely forget about the previous one. Always see kids going to stores and trading in their games for new ones.

Look at COD4 on pc, the Galactic Warfare mod or Paintball mode. Again the console versions have only what came with the game.

TF2, probably the best example. TF2 STILL has complete full support after so many years AND still has new content almost monthly I would say. So many huge updates and content recently while the console version has completely nothing.

You can do everything on pc. People use computers every day, either for work, internet, school, music, social interactions, gaming...etc So why not go out of your way to make a computer that is for you; a "pc". If you don't like a component, change it. You don't like your keyboard or mouse, change it. Don't like the OS, change it.

For the most part, I like to play all games on max settings. But every once in awhile, like SC2 for me, I enjoy it better on the lowest settings. That's just me. And that's what great about pc, you can change the graphic settings to your liking or change it so it's enjoyable for you. And of course on console you can't.

Another great feature that I absolutely and I mean this, I absolutely LOVE is eyefinity. While console gamers can pick out the biggest tv, they will never be able to game on 3+ monitors with such high resolutions. Playing on 3+ monitors just makes you go "why didn't I do this sooner?"

And not to mention you are already paying for internet, why pay extra to play online? Unbelievable that you have to pay to play online on console. And not to mention all the crap that they charge you for. They charge you to change your gamertag, gamer picture, to buy new themes for your background, new clothes/items for your avatars...etc

Complete rip off. As we all know if you don't like your name on pc, go on steam or whatever and change it lol Free of charge. On PC we can have multiple accounts while consoles have only one.

So at the end of the day, pc is lightyears ahead for gamers because you get to game to your likings, to what fits you as a gamer. It goes way beyond graphics. Even though pc graphics absolutely PWN!!!!

All true but sheeple don't want options, they want everything decided for them, subsidized, and spoon fed w/ a monthly fee. Its why apple has been so profitable lately. Consuls basically syandarized subsidized gaming pc's. We'll give you $1k in hardware for $500 because you'll pay it back w/ interest in fees.
And I wouldn't mind seeing an eyefinity option in next gen consuls, I hope they have at least 2 hdmi or display ports, if not 3.

2015 I bet. By then Nintendo will have a new system dominating the market.

Matters what market you are talking about. Minivans outsell Lambo's, does it make them better? Both are consoles, but both are not after the same demographic, they do share some of course since they are game consoles.
