Hi, I have been dealing with thermal throttling for about 2.5 years now, I have tried repasting chips with top notch stuff, laptop cooling pad, external housefan etc etc

I have a Lenovo y510p i7 4700mq with SLI 750m video cards and if i run 2.4ghz across all 4 phys cores *8* if u include HyperThreads i get 99* EASILY on League of Legends low-med settings..

I would be willing to use Teamviewer, Skype, Discord .. whatever, please someone help me!

Should just leave it at stock and not mess with it.

Would OCing software like MSI Afterburner to lower power target work for something like this? Or are the chips too old?

I don't suppose you can access BIOS/UEFI here and change things, so a software solution is your only option. I have no XP with that, I avoid this kind of crap entirely.

All my drivers are up to date * used IO Bit driver manager * to check for this stuff.

And yes I am using Throttlestop right now but it's all so.. overwhelming never done this kind of deal. i know undervolt is obviously -mhz n what not .. but idk proper ratios, proper testing etc etc

Nothing in my UEFI/BIOS unless I do a Flash or something and ive never done that before so I dont wanna screw anything up.

This is i7 4700mq stock speed ( 2.4ghz ) and at idle, but when i load any game no matter how little the detail is.. that temperature goes sky high

That already looks like a pretty hefty offset value to me. If you still can't get the temps right like that, I'm afraid its just the limitations of your cooling at work.

I would say, start with an offset value of -0.03 and see how it goes. Unless you are sure the -0.07 is stable
Your temps say 80 C which is pretty damn good for a laptop cpu - 80-85 C is a relatively low temp and should be your target under a heavy stressed CPU. Run something like OCCT - http://www.ocbase.com/index.php/download - to stress test your settings for short periods of time, so you have a basic idea of the temps and stability.

If you need to drop more voltage, you can also dial down the 4-core clock to 24, 23 or so. It's a small performance hit for better temps.

Would XTU work here? Its a lot more user friendly IMO

How do I make my comp NOT do MASSIVE frame drops whilst at this clock speed say if the temps raise up to 95-98?

Edit: yeah the -0.75 is stable .. but say for instance.. i bumped offset voltage to -0.8 and I get a BSoD, what is your insight on dropping down the multiplier to decrease voltage even more? im not 100% sure on how this works, learning.. been doing extensive reading for past week or so testing a bunch of stuff out but i tend to overthink things.

I fully understand the quest you are on here, but I also have the same model, just with a 4200m CPU in it with SLi 750s. Simply put, if you want to game on a laptop, this was a bad choice.

I hope there is a way you can figure it out, but everything I tried just got me to the fact that the cooling is insufficient for the parts inside of it, and unless you want to play really old titles, you may want to sell it off and look for something more capable.

Yeah I agree, i didnt want to go with a laptop, but being in the Service, well.. USMC you dont have much room to put ur shit and always going somewhere. So unfortunately.. so I can satisfy my cravings here and there, this was my only option

The thing is, if you were to buy a mid-to high end laptop now, with a single Pascal GPU and a decent 4-core at 3.0 Ghz or so, 1080p / high 60 fps gaming is easily within reach. Those few years of improvements have been pretty big strides on this front. Just get something with a bit more bulk, size does matter.

Welcome to TPU and thanks for your service, there are a few of us service members floating around here. I got out of the Army in 97, thank you for picking up where I/we left off.
As to your laptop issue, I have a Acer Helios 300 predator with a gtx1060 in it and it still gets quite warm while gaming with high settings. If you can afford it I would recommend it or the asus rog gaming laptops. I cannot speak for MSI ones because I do not have any recent experience with them, I am sure someone around here does.
There is a lot of good advice here, enjoy and thanks again.

That peak in temperatures to 95 C is worrying, but its not instability. You aborted the test - run it for 5 minutes, if it completes, you should just roll with it until you experience instability in normal use.

If you want more certainty, stress test for a longer time, or do Linpack test, but that one is AVX so it will hammer your CPU like a madman - don't do this until you have seriously lowered your voltages.

Thank you for the welcome ;) and yeah I would prefer to lean away from buying another rig/laptop, this laptop when i first got it.. shit.. I was running LoL max settings with around 400fps.. now.. hell my avg seems to be 20-30lol

How can i seriously lower my voltages? What are steps to say in this instance.. i leave my cores @ 2.4ghz and say.. i max my offset voltages at .. 0.75 i.e; if i bump up to 0.8 I get BSoD's, how can I surpass 0.75 without crashing/freezes/BSOD's etc..

If it ran a lot cooler when you bought it, you may want to have it looked at, and cleaned out thoroughly. I mean, gaining 6-8 C over the years is reasonable, but a lot more is a sign of (impending) failure.

About voltages: don't ever bump down the voltage right to the lowest possible. Its dangerous because you may lock yourself out of restoring the setting entirely.

START with -0.03v and see if you remain stable.
If yes, lower to -0.04v and re test
rinse and repeat
when unstable, add +0.005 to what you had, test again.

If that is then stable (as in, 5 min run completes no errors or signs of fail), you cannot lower the core offset further. You basically found its limit. Whenever you settle for something that seems stable, and at some point in time you get odd crashes that are new to you, add another +0.005v and roll with it. OR, you can lower the 4-core turbo down with 1 multiplier. That is another way to fine tune towards stability.

What you see in the chart there: the temperature spikes to 95 C which is the throttle point of the CPU - the CPU clocks down to, what? 1.5 Ghz 800mhz (!) or so? So that is when you would have lost your performance in games as well.

I would suggest the following: set your 4 core turbo to 20x - if you can now avoid that CPU throttling, you will gain 1.2 Ghz under load. Pretty huge.

Get an offset of -0.05v and see where you land. If it still throttles, I would say its a lost case

When you speak of downing my multiplier do u mean do that at the point i found my MAX offset voltage but.. temperature is kind of an issue ?

No I mean do it now - you see, you will lose the multiplier when the CPU throttles at 95 C, and then your CPU runs at 800mhz.

So if you manually set a lower turbo from the get-go, you can get much lower voltage as well, and avoid the 95 C, and run at, for example: 2000mhz instead of 2300. Or even drop down to 1800. It still beats 800 :) The lower you clock it, the more voltage you can take off.

You mean subtract another 0.05v from offset? Throttlestop doesnt let me do that small of adjustments only letting me go from 79.1-80.1 and 80.1-81.1 etc.

You can set larger offset ranges on the buttons above the slider. Is it not possible to type in those fields instead of sliding?

If you already use -0.07v now, drop to -0.09v or even 0.1 Any less won't be lowering your temps too much.
