I am thinking of upgrading my 5960x.
i could get a 10900k for 370.-euro and would buy a circa 200.- mainboard z490 or z590 new
or a 10980xe with asus encore mainboard for 1000.-

both are a dead end on upgrading.
new one should be 10 cores minimum.
or should i go amd?

i am only upgrading every 5 years or so and would like to know what ya think.
thanks in advance

I would think a 5950X would outperform a 10980XE in both MT and ST and yet be cheaper, and use less power.
The only thing 10980XE has going for it is the 48 PCIe lanes, but the 5950X has PCIe gen 4.

Out of those 2 the 10900k..... or 5900/5950X if swapping to Amd

If you can I'd personally wait for Alderlake or Zen 4 due to the fact that either platform will likely last you much longer.

now that i wrote it down the deals seem less tempting.
for 1000.- i could get a new 5950x and a good budget motherboard.

but am4 socket is dead end too? scratch.........

i waited so long that my feet are trembling to the upgrade beat.

Software yes, lots!
AMD has been supporting AM4 for 4 years now (thats twice as long as any Intel platform in the last decade) and will probably support it for another year. But with DDR5 Memory knocking on the door, AMD will soon introduce a new platform as well. Hopefully this will last another 4-5 years!

I would wait for next gen for both and then ask again, you will easily survive until then with a 5960x.

If you have to have an upgrade now I would go AMD if you can, just a better option, I would also not even consider the 10900k as it just costs more but offers nothing over the 10850k (which is not a bad purchase given the price)

thank you all for your suggestions.

last upgrade was from 4770k to 3930k to 5960x

i will wait till ddr5.
putting money in the near end era platforms is not wise and i just needed a clapp on the head.

thanks again

Why is it not wise? You know with what you're dealing with, what to avoid, and what to buy. New platform will surely have some bugs until it's been ironed out with newer iterations. Another bonus is lower price, next gen memory and CPUs won't be cheap, that's for sure. Combination with current gen will be fine for years.

thats always the dilemma -wait for new-buy current - or last gen cheaper.

during last 2 years i tried to buy a 6950x but prices did not seem good for me.
so i pushed it further + further and then the itch came and then ya suddenly want to buy something.

in this crazy time+ age i am very happy to be able to afford it.

I would probably wait.. but the fact AM4 is dead shouldn't be that big of a deal. Usually when you buy Intel its a dead end platform too. I bet DDR5 will be awesome. I will move to a new platform when DDR5 is a little more mature. Even though it should destroy DDR4 out of the box..

There is always something new around the corner.. and when you get used to waiting it becomes easier to put off an upgrade because you are always waiting for the latest.. instead of enjoying right now. But for me, I was using DDR3 up until last November.. so I am ok.. until I see the numbers from the new gen drop :D

I will do a platform upgrade probably around 2023 or so. My new CPU will be here in a few days so I kinda hooped myself :D

Hi,
Indeed wait for next amd platform should be awesome I'll likely jump in too
Should also wait for amd to flood the market for best savings
Early is always price gouge time.

Sorry I didn't see your question

I bought a 5900X because I am an idiot.

I mean I could probably flip it at a loss, but if she is a strong runner then I don't mind sitting on it for a couple of years..

Fingers crossed! :D

I'm a bigger idiot (stupid NewEgg Shuffle).

I'm sticking with it until 2026 with a GPU update sometime before then.

I figure I should be ok - I made it 8 years with a 2700k.

To the OP - nothing wrong with the 10900k - but if a 10 core CPU is your minimum, take a serious look at the Ryzen 5900x/5950x.

As a former 5960x owner, I can tell you my Ryzen 3900x system beat it hands down. The PCI-e 4.0 capability and a fast PCI-e M.2 4.0 SSD is a huge step forward. I built a lot of 5800x systems recently for customers and that rig along with an 570x mainboard is excellent. The 5960x while impressive for its time just cant keep up, not even close. I would recommend jumping to AMD Ryzen if you are looking for something to run both fast and have heavier lifting capacity. Power efficiency is also excellent overall. As far as DDR5 and the Next Gen Ryzen, its going to be at least a year before we see that gear at any kind of availability. Perhaps Longer.

I'm still running an old core i7 3770k on this machine and a Core i9 9900 KFC on my gamer box. Though I Unlocked some features in Windows 10 that microsoft does not want you the user to have. Makes the cpu and whole system run about 25% faster

Everything you can get at the moment is dead end, then again first gen DDR5 will probably not be a fun experience either. 10900k is a decent deal but the motherboards are pricey and you don't get as much I/O as with RKL or AM4 (if that matters to you). Zen 3 and 10900k are around on par in terms of gaming performance, 10900k can tune up better if you put a lot of effort into it, Zen 3 is faster with less effort usually. Cost and performance wise (including multicore) i would consider 10900k(f) and 5800x similar when accounting for overall costs. I would personally just go with a 5900x or 5800x, those should hold decent resale value as well, usually the top processors of any platform tend to stay at high prices on the used market.

If you don't need the performance now you can always wait it out, but I wouldn't say it's a bad time to buy CPU/mobo wise.

Guys chill out, there is now doubt that current intel and AMD offerings will have noticeable performance improvements over the 5960x, but since intel's 14nm and AMDs AM4 are end of life platform by the end of this year, there is no need to rush anything, its not like the 5960x is incapable of gaming and multitasking today's applications at satisfactory enough performance, not at all really, so it would be wise to get an extra year out of his current build, until true next gen platforms with DDR5 releases, especially with current hardware shortages drives prices higher buy new things now might not be the best option

Just get a 5800X, why you want 10 cores minimum? What do you use the pc for, gaming don't need more than 8 and won't need more than 8 for years going forward, even 6 cores will be enough for 99.9% of games in 5 years from now, consoles dictates this and they have 8 cores with 1-2 reserved, runnning at much lower clockspeed than pc chips too and SMT disabled in most cases

If you really need alot of cores and threads, for non-gaming, get 5900x or 5950x if you can find one

I would personally not jump on 1st gen little.big for desktop aka alder lake, will feature DDR5 and probably PCIe 5.0 too, intels first true next gen platform in many years

AM5 launches next year with DDR5, and 5nm chips - this is what I would do if I needed to upgrade next year.

I personally wait for 2023-2024 to see whats up when both companies have tested and tried next gen platforms out with issues and drivers fixed
